preface

In this brochure we have the pleasure of presenting you an innovative study option: a Bachelor’s Program designed to prepare its students for the prospective requirements of a future-oriented field of work, where an intelligent linking of charitable & profit-oriented, public & private, and local / regional & international aspects is essential. The combination of specialist aspects of the nonprofit, social and health care segment with political-economic, socialpsychological, legal, business administrative and management-related contents provides the basis of the program’s labor market-oriented and innovative profile offering excellent career prospects.

The program, therefore equips its students with the knowledge and tools required for a career in private and public organizations whose object is to deal with fundamental social concerns, in most cases without the explicit goal of generating a profit but nevertheless setting a high standard in terms of professional management to ensure competitiveness and be able to provide effective and efficient services meeting the demands of their core client groups. The medium-term perspective for graduates of the three-year Bachelor’s Program extends to administrative and management positions in the nonprofit, social and health care segment and related fields.

background

In view of the major social and global changes nonprofit, social and healthcare institutions are forced to adapt to rapidly changing needs and problems and respond flexibly to new requirements. Decision- makers in these organizations need to be able to competently join in a discussion, make critical assessments and clearly analyze, provide effective arguments and take confident business decisions. The application of up-to-date business management tools and methods, a sound knowledge of institutional correlations, and decision-taking and leadership competencies are absolutely mandatory qualities and abilities expected from experts in the nonprofit, social and health care sector. Consequently the demand for qualified staff at all organizational levels is continuously on the rise.

career prospects

Graduates of this Bachelor’s program are active in particular in the following fields and segments, for which substantial growth rates, and therefore excellent career prospects are projected. This program might therefore be regarded as a sort of ‘missing link’ between the main categories of current MCI study programs, which prepare students for a career on a either management level in traditionally profit-oriented industries or in classic fields of social work, whose services are intended to support clients faced with specific problem situations.

  • health | nursing | public health | health promotion
  • social services | basic social security | provision of subsistence | welfare
  • culture | leisure | recreation | sports
  • churches | religious communities
  • education | studies | science | research

program

The Bachelor’s program Nonprofit, Social & Health Care Management comprises 6 semesters of 15 weeks each and lectures totaling 118 semester hours or 1,770 hours of instruction (excl. internship). Winter semesters last from September / October to February, summer semesters from March to
June / July.

Lectures are basically in German, however, certain lectures and exams may also be in a foreign language. Attendance is generally mandatory for all lectures. During the 6th semester students complete an integrative internship of 15 weeks. Moreover, students have the opportunity to spend the 4th or 5th semester at an MCI partner university abroad; the lectures attended there can be applied to the required credit units.

A special focus is on personality development, team behavior, conflict management, moderation and presentation techniques and negotiation and communication skills in foreign languages. The option of spending the 4th or 5th semester at one of MCI’s many partner universities all over the world promotes the students’ international action competence and intercultural understanding.

research & development

The strong link between the study program and practice-oriented research and development projects constitutes an integral part of the program, and creates an attractive opportunity for students to address concrete problems and solution concepts from social work agencies, nonprofit-sector and applied sciences.

going global

International orientation is an essential component of the study program. It is reflected in the composition of the faculty, the students, the curriculum and the case studies and projects selected for the program. Particular emphasis is placed on an excellent command of the English language.

A number of selected students will have the opportunity of spending the 4th or 5th semester at a foreign partner university whereas all students can do their professional internship during the 6th semester in a foreign social agency or institution.

A list of presently about 100 MCI university partners can be found under www.mci.edu/com/international.

faculty

The academic staff consists of full-time professors and lecturers of Management Center Innsbruck as well as acknowledged experts from the fields of science, technology and business as well as the independent professions. This guarantees that the latest developments in the world of science and practical application are synergistically integrated in the curriculum of the program.

Coupling progressive didactic teaching methods with intensive mentoring ensures a practical education that offers the support needed to complete this course of studies within the projected time-frame. ’Theoretical‘ and ’practical‘ are not contradictory terms, but as a fusion offer opportunities and challenges for a new form of teaching and learning.

tuition fees

Students are required to pay a tuition fee of currently EUR 363 per semester plus membership fee to the Austrian Student Union. To prevent admitted students from failing to begin or dropping their studies, a deposit of currently EUR 363 must be paid at the beginning of the program.
