background & career prospects

The past few decades have been characterized by a fundamental structural change in the field of social pro fes sions. The educational scope, professionalization and qualification requirements have changed considerably due to a different social framework and the increasing complexity of social problems. The effects of divergent lifestyles, a constantly changing workworld, ecological and economic crises and a newly structured welfare state have created new challenges. In addition, the importance of preventive measures as opposed to mere crisis intervention, is i creasingly recognized. Our society needs academically sound and ethically and financially acceptable concepts for dealing with social problems from sociological, psychological, legal, organ izational and economic perspectives. At the same time professional, self-responsible and result-oriented actions in the social field become more and more important.

The aim of this study program is to provide a practice-oriented training of potential experts with a problem-conscious and result-oriented approach in the field of both regional and international social work. Graduates will not only be able to identify social problems but also to develop interdisciplinary solutions which are socially compatible, sustainable, effective and efficient. Possible professional fields with interdisciplinary careers are:

  • childhood | youth | family | elderly
  • education | profession | self-development
  • delinquency | rehabilitation
  • health care (disabilities, addiction, psychosomatic and chronic problems)
  • basic welfare services
  • migration | integration

  program

The fifth semester can be spent at one of MCI’s foreign partner universities; courses and lectures will be credited. In the fifth and sixth semester students are required to complete their Bachelor’s theses.

The study program provides a thorough academic and practical qualification in applied science of social work and major related sciences (law, psychology, sociology, politics, education, etc.). In the applied emphasis is put on the explicit development of social work skills and a practice-oriented education in inter disciplinary practice.

The thorough command of foreign languages, internationally relevant topics, case studies, project assignments and internships are other major foci of this social work degree program which guarantees excellent opportunities for graduates in the job market.

  admission

Applications for admission to the Bachelor of Social Work program must be submitted in the form of a standardized application form accompanied by the required documents within the period stipulated. There are 50 places available each year.

If the number of applicants exceeds the number of places, admission is granted based upon the following criteria.

1. Career background
20%
The applicant’s professional background is considered on the basis of the submitted application ma terials. Particular attention is paid to education and certificates, general professional development and position (du ti es , responsibilities, etc.) as well as academic and professional goals.

2. Written exam
30%
The written entrance exam tests the compatibility of the applicants with the target group.

3. Interview
50%
The interview is conducted by a commission and gives applicants the opportunity to present them selves personally, to expand on information provided in the application materials and to explain their academic and professional goals.

Applicants are informed as soon as possible regarding their admission. Applicants who are not admitted due to the limited number of places are put on a waiting list and can – if they are still interested – be admitted if a place becomes available.

The admissions process is required each year. Even if the applicant was offered a place or put on the waiting list in a previous year, preferential consideration of applicants is not possible.

faculty

The academic staff consists of full-time professors and lecturers of MCI, as well as acknowledged experts from the fields of social work, science and independent practice. This guarantees that the latest developments in the world of science and practical application are integrated in the curriculum of the program.

Coupling progressive teaching methods with intensive mentoring ensures a practical education that offers the support needed to complete this course of studies within the projected time-frame. ‘Theoretical’ and ‘practical’ are not contradictory terms, but as a fusion offer opportunities and challenges for a new form of teaching and learning.

tuition fees

Students are required to pay a tuition fee of currently EUR 363 per semester plus membership fee to the Austrian Student Union. To prevent admitted students from failing to begin or dropping out of their studies, a deposit of currently EUR 363 must be paid at the beginning of the program. The deposit will then be used to pay the fee for the second semester. Students are also responsible for paying the required course materials distributed by the Management Center Innsbruck.

  degree

Graduates of the program are conferred the academic degree Bachelor of Arts in Social Sciences, in short BA or B.A. (attested by a leaving certificate, the Bachelor’s diploma, the international diploma supplement etc.). Other than embarking on their professional career, graduates will have the option of continuing their studies by a corresponding Master’s program in Austria or abroad.

MCI offers a number of internationally oriented Master’s programs. The Master’s program Social Work, Social Policy & Management (starting 2010) is addressed to the graduates of this Bachelor’s program. Grad uates of a Master‘s program are eligible to be admitted to corresponding doctoral studies.
