preface

Since its establishment MCI, in close cooperation with the University of Innsbruck and renowned partners from all over the world, has developed and successfully anchored in the market a series of top-notch management training courses and programs for executives and potential executives. Numerous graduates and students corroborate the outstanding quality of these practice-oriented executive education programs and profit from the acquired knowledge, network, experience and the esteem they meet with in trade and industry.

The MCI started in cooperation with the Frankfurt School of Finance & Management in Innsbruck and Frankfurt its master degree program for professionals, ‘LL.M. International Business & Tax Law’, in order to provide a quality-oriented further education option at postgraduate level for international target groups. The quality and acceptance of this master degree program, which is the only of its kind in the German-speaking area, are ensured by the involvement of renowned experts from Austria and abroad, close relations with trade and industry, case study orientation and the internationally acknowledged degree of a ‘Master of Laws’ (LL.M.).

background/benefit

Basic legal training is usually centered on national law and focuses on the communication of theoretical knowledge. Accordingly, there is great demand for a practice-oriented further training option providing for a sound background in international business and tax law. The postgraduate master degree program ‘LL.M. International Business & Tax Law’ is designed to meet the requirements of an adequate basic training and further education of managers and potential future executives in the light of the globalization of business law and the economy.

target groups

The LL.M. program is designed to attract graduates of legal and non-legal study courses who wish to acquire a sound qualification in international business and tax law for their future careers, in particular in the following fields:
  • the liberal professions (attorneys, notaries, tax consultants, certified public accountants, conventional trustees, management consultants etc.)
  • forensic professions (judicial service, penal institutions etc.)
  • businesses and nonprofit organizations (management, supervisory bodies, portfolio management, controlling, accounting, financial services etc.)
  • public administration (central, regional and local authorities, associations, international organizations etc.)
Another target group are college or university graduates just on the point of starting their careers who aim at complementing their education by a profound international orientation.

didactics

The didactics of the LL.M. program is based on a tried concept adapted to the specific needs of decision makers active in their profession. The scheduling of the seminar modules (usually from Thursday or Friday to Saturday) facilitates the systematic implementation of contents during the ensuing application phases.

The contents and methodology of the LL.M. program are aimed at making use of the professional expertise and personal experience of the participants as valuable potential through a mutual exchange of experiences, and at providing the students with ongoing critical feedback and thereby with sustainable support in the learning and implementation process. Accordingly, the repetitive ‘rattling off’ of mechanistically acquired knowledge is to be avoided wherever possible; instead the focus is on promoting the students’ ability to handle concrete professional problems in a responsible manner, develop creative solutions and resolutely implement agreed measures. The realization of these objectives is furthered by

  • group work and case studies complemented by relevant discussions and presentations
  • "reviews" including concrete practical questions and problems facilitating the consideration of the acquired know-how in a practical context
  • a scientifically profound master thesis (‘Comprehensive Case Study’)
In individual cases modules and exams may also be conducted in English. The international recognition of the students’ academic achievement is ensured by ECTS.

academic degree

Subject to the available evidence of academic achievement the academic degree of a ‘Master of International Business & Tax Law’ (LL.M.) will be conferred on the students during an official ceremony in accordance with the provisions of the Austrian University Studies Act and the approval by the Austrian Federal Ministry of Education, Science and Culture and the Hessen State Ministry of Higher Education, Research and the Arts.

faculty

The members of the faculty are renowned experts in international and European business and tax law. In addition to professors teaching at MCI, the University of Innsbruck, the Frankfurt School of Finance & Management and universities and colleges of various other EU member states the students are instructed mainly by decision makers from law firms and businesses acting on an international level and from the public administration domain, who in the course of their careers have obtained detailed know-how on the problems related to international business and tax law.

The lecturers of the LL.M. program place a main focus, not just on the communication of knowledge but also on application-oriented feedback and critical advice. The cooperation with the students facilitates the development of networks to mentor the motivated throughout their further professional careers and personal development.

The members of the faculty are selected carefully, are subjected to strict evaluation criteria and are committed to the goal of supporting their students, by way of the professional adaptation of the contents and networking of the individual modules, in developing the ability to cope with complex problems on an interdisciplinary level.
