preface

Since its establishment in the mid nineties the MCI, in close cooperation with the University of Innsbruck and renowned partners from all over the world, has developed and successfully anchored in the market a series of top-notch management training courses and degree programs for executives and potential executives. Numerous graduates and students confirm the outstanding quality of these practice-oriented executive education programs and profit from the acquired knowledge, network, experience and the esteem are met with in trade and industry.

The MCI started its post-graduate program ‘General Management Executive MBA’, organized on a part-time basis, in order to be able to continue mentoring especially committed and qualified graduates in their professional career and personal development, and to provide an attractive educational option at postgraduate level for international target groups.

The quality and acceptance of this program, which is the only of its kind in Austria, are ensured by compliance with international standards in respect of admission criteria, content, lecturers and didactics, the exemplary modular concept, scientific foundations, as well as the legal basis created for this MBA program by special decree by the Austrian Ministry of Education and Science and the international accreditation by FIBAA.

background

As globalization and competitive pressure steadily increase, there is a growing demand in trade and industry for internationally trained executives capable of moving sure-footedly in a complex and competitive environment. The requirements are manifold: In addition to specialist knowledge and methodological expertise, social competence, executive know-how, entrepreneurial thinking and the willingness to take decisions are needed. The MBA program is a practice-oriented post-graduate program that meets these expectations.

The objective of the program is to offer a top-notch training and continuing education option, both practice- related and with scientific foundations, for higher executive and management levels, with a focus on how to cope with international challenges. Entrepreneurial thinking, decision-making and acting in an international competition situation are the major aspects of this post-graduate degree program.

The contents and organization of the General Management Executive MBA program are customized to meet the specific needs and expectations of executives active in their profession as well as the companies and organizations seconding them.

target groups

The target group of the MBA program comprises entrepreneurs, high-level management executives and decision-makers with some executive experience who wish to qualify for higher management levels and for coping with international challenges. Admission to the General Management Executive MBA program is subject to the applicant having been active in a qualified position for at least five years (ideally, students should be active in a qualified position also during the MBA program).

Being a post-graduate degree program, the MBA program is designed for

  • graduates with a degree in non-economic disciplines;
  • graduates with a degree in economic disciplines aiming at a profound functional specialization and international orientation who have taken their degree already some time ago.

Executives without an academic degree but having shown an outstanding professional performance may be admitted by way of exception, to be decided on a case-by-case basis in accordance with the criteria of the admission’s process.

structure of the mba

The MBA program comprises four semesters organized on a part-time basis for working students. The modular concept consists of four consecutive stages, allowing the flexible combination of existing MCI management courses.

Each stage is completed by a two-day intensive module aimed at ensuring – within the meaning of an integrative general survey – that the participants, as members of interdisciplinary teams, in addition to their specific management know-how and personal core qualifications develop the skill of inter-functional thinking and acting (Business Plan Competition, Living Case Study, Comprehensive Case Study).

STAGE I
general management

During this stage the students obtain a profound insight into current methods, tools and developments in management-oriented business administration. The objective is to communicate the basis of success of entrepreneurial action, structuring, decision-making and leadership and put them into the context of concrete applications.

Stage I is concluded by a two-day business plan competition, which provides for the integrative linking of the main contents of the first stage and culminates in the drafting of a concrete action plan for a project of the students’ professional environment. A number of different teams develop a business concept up to the point where it can be introduced on the market, then present their solutions, thereby competing with each other within a classic Business Plan Competition.

STAGE II
specialization in management

Both scientific research and entrepreneurial experience clearly indicate that as a rule, executives are capable of a generalist management of different disciplines only if they have themselves worked in, and acquired in-depth knowledge of and comprehensive expertise in, a specific discipline.

Stage II therefore provides for a discipline-related specialization in a core management function, with the possibility to select one of the MCI functional courses. This enables the students to acquire in-depth knowledge of the substance of a special field in management. The participants select one of the functional courses below or ask for further specialization.

Within the framework of the ‘Living Case Study’, interdisciplinary home groups work on concrete consultancy projects. This will help the individual participants to improve their insight into inter-functional cooperation, to enhance their ability to develop comprehensive problems and to gain new professional perspectives. A two-day workshop provides the students with methodological support while working on the Living Case Study.

STAGE III
international management

In addition to profound know-how, personal format and integrity, the expectations MBA graduates are met with in their professional life mainly focus on entrepreneurial thinking, commitment, willingness to take decisions, ability to handle stress, and internationality. The MCI therefore considers it essential that MBA programs include a substantial study of international contents and develop the ability to assert oneself in an international environment and a sure-footed approach to other cultures.

These are the main objectives of stage III. The International Management Program (IMP) is taught by acknowleged international faculty in English throughout the whole course and schedules intensive seminar modules at renowned international partner universities abroad. There, MCI students attend joint MBA classes, benefit from the intercultural experience of an international student community and receive a separate certificate of the respective institution.

During a concluding intensive module the students work on one or more interdisciplinary case studies addressing problems of international management (Comprehensive Case Study). The goal is to communicate a final integrative general survey and to further enhance the students' ability to think and act on an inter-functional level.

STAGE IV
master thesis

The master thesis, complying with scientific standards, concludes the General Management Executive MBA program; the students are expected to address a specific problem of their own enterprise or their relevant professional environment, making reference to related international aspects and taking into account international developments.

didactics

The contents and methodology of the MBA program are aimed at making use of the professional expertise and personal experience of the participants as valuable potential through a mutual exchange of experiences, and at providing the students with ongoing critical feedback and thereby with sustainable support in the learning and implementation process. In the seminar modules situations are created deliberately that allow the students to apply the acquired knowledge and put it to the test in view of a concrete practical problem.

The didactics of the MBA program

  • are based on practice-related project work ensuring the continuous transfer of the contents of the seminar modules to the student's own professional environment and retransfer of experiences to the seminar modules;
  • stage I includes an interdisciplinary final project, which should ideally address a specific problem of the student's own enterprise or relevant professional environment;
  • culminates in the formulation of a scientifically profound master thesis, which shall address selected topics taken from individual MBA program stages and develop application-oriented solutions therefor, as well as provide the graduates with concrete guidelines and an implementation plan.

exams / degree

The provision of evidence of academic achievement including exams constitutes an integral component of the quality assurance system of the MBA program. Performance is rated throughout the whole program. In the course of the MBA program, the students have to take exams on selected courses and prepare and / or contribute to project work and interdisciplinary case studies.

For obtaining a degree a scientific master thesis must be completed, either in German or in English. The master thesis shall be a praxis-oriented project work complying with scientific standards, wherein the knowledge and competencies acquired during the program are to be applied to a concrete management problem from the professional environment of the student.

The final exam is a comprehensive oral examination before an interdisciplinary board of examiners. Admission to the final exam is subject to the successful completion of all stages (I to IV) and a positive assessment/grading of the master thesis. The final exam before the examining board comprises the presentation and defence of the master thesis, followed by a discussion.

Subject to the available evidence of academic achievement, a positive assessment of the master thesis and the successful completion of the final exam before the board of examiners, the graduate receives a diploma covering the entire contents of the MBA program and is awarded the degree of a ‘Master of Business Administration (MBA)’ according to the acknowledgement of the Austrian Ministry of Education and Science during an official ceremony.

faculty

The members of the faculty are selected carefully, are subjected to strict evaluation criteria and are committed to the goal of supporting their students, by way of professional adaptation of the contents and networking of the individual modules, in developing the ability to cope with complex problems on an interdisciplinary level.

Besides the actual communication of knowledge, the main focus of the lecturers involved in the MBA program is on providing application-oriented feedback and critical advice. The cooperation with the students gives rise to the creation of different kinds of networks that accompany motivated people throughout their further professional and personal development.
