History

In 2000 the Government of the state of Tyrol agreed to establish a Study Program on Peace, Development and Conflict Management at the Management Center Innsbruck (MCI). The MCI invited - as in many cases before - the University of Innsbruck to become its partner in this endeavour. In the meeting of Mai 16th 2001, the faculty of social sciences approved the title of Master of Advanced Studies (MAS) in Peace, Development and Conflict Management to this program. Therefore it is legally a University of Innsbruck post-graduate course, administrated by the MCI.

In the summer of 2002 the pilot semester of the new course will be offered in close partnership with the well-established Center at the Castellón University. The University of Innsbruck and the MCI want to thank the Centro Internacional Bancaja para la Paz y el Desarrollo, Castellon/Spain for their support in this initial phase. (...more..)

Principles

Created in 2000, the international UNESCO year of "culture of peace", the program is orientated towards the key points of the UNESCO Manifesto 2000.

    Those are:
    - Respect all Life
    - Reject Violence
    - Share with Others
    - Listen to Understand
    - Preserve the Planet
    - Rediscover Solidarity.

The six pledges of the Manifesto 2000 bear the signatures of Nobel Peace Prize Laureates and 75.000.000 people by the end of 2000. The program is highly committed to contribute to the implementation of these key points in our every day's reality and in academic work.

The didactic principles of the program are derived from Johan Galtung´s theory on direct, structural and cultural violence.

The MAS-Program in Peace, Development and International Conflict Management of the University of Innsbruck and the MCI
    Introduction

The Master of Advanced Studies (MAS) Program in Peace, Development and International Conflict Management of the University of Innsbruck offers academic education and professional training in the interdisciplinary field of Peace, Development and International Conflict Management. The MAS is the most prestigious postgraduate degree within the Austrian Law for Higher Education (§ 28.1.UniStG). The European Credit Transfer System (ECTS) permits to transfer credits of this MAS Program to any equivalent MA Program in the world.

Participants gain specific qualifications in the areas of peace theory, development, democracy and human rights, and enhance their skills for practical, peaceful International Conflict transformation. It also aims to provide participants with an awareness of the multiple cultural and regional perspectives from which to oberserve these academic fields. The program is operated and accredited by the University of Innsbruck, and is held at the Management Center Innsbruck (MCI).

This program is meant to challenge students both inside and outside the classroom. Although the courses reflect the high quality of our international faculty, a significant portion of the education occurs outside the seminars. Since Peace, Development and International Conflict Management is an interdisciplinary field, our students have backgrounds in a variety of traditional academic fields in addition to Peace Studies. Unlike most modern universities, this program understands that students themselves are valuable sources of information. Therefore, in addition to a standard education transfered by professors and scripts, we also cultivate a more horizontal approach to education, where students can teach each other. Given the diverse faculty and student body, we think this approach very effective and challenging to the students and faculty. Thus, it creates an environment in which conversations among students and faculty continue in a small community. This stimulates the growth of a "community of scholars", that is particularly rich because of its diversity.

The faculty of the MAS Program in Peace, Development and International Conflict Management mainly consists of professors and instructors from universities, organisations and institutes from all over the world. Given this structure, we are able to attract some of the best instructors in the world from varied disciplines. The small class sizes (normally 15 students per course) also allow students a high level of accessibility to their teachers.

A student enrolled in this program should be prepared to find him-/herself sitting next to students from Uganda, Bhutan, Nicaragua, Sweden or Australia, to name just a few of the countries which our students call home. The individuals themselves often reflect the cross pressures and dislocations of the modern world. Some will have experienced wars and violent International Conflicts that the rest of the world has only known through media.

Upon completion of a semester every student will have had cultural perceptions and assumptions about other societies, as well as one's own, challenged, and in many cases significantly modified, as a new web of relationships comes to inform the student's life. Our staff has seen close friendships develop between students from very diverse backgrounds. In the future, a student may find that he or she is invited to a wedding in Zimbabwe, a rock festival in India, or a holiday on the beaches of El Salvador. Or, you might be asked to help support local peace work in Guatemala, the rebuilding of a town in Kosovo, or the resettlement of someone refugees from Rwanda. We believe that this program provides students with an understanding of peace, development and International Conflict management that goes beyond the merely academic. Our effort is to create a diverse community of learning focusing on our most difficult and most important problems. Inevitably students learn that solutions to these problems can only begin to occur if they recognise and begin to understand the various cultures that create this rapidly changing world. The educational experience in the MAS Program of Peace, Development and International Conflict Management is therefore a microcosm of the foundations of International Conflict management; for it fosters the respect and understanding of other ways of life.

Curriculum

Levels of Academic Achievement

    1. Master of Advanced Studies (MAS) in Peace, Development and International Conflict Management

A Master of Advanced Studies (MAS) in Peace, Development and International Conflict Management will be awarded to students who successfully complete 3 semesters (540 class hours) and a Master's thesis. (§ 28.1 UniStG) The European Credit Transfer System (ECTS) permits to transfer this degree to any equivalent international Master of Arts.

    2. Academic Conflict Manager

A student who successfully completes three terms (540 class hours) in the MAS Program in Peace, Development and International Conflict Management will receive an Academic Conflict Manager's degree (§ 28.3. UniStG). This degree can also be transferred through the ECTS.

    3. Certificate

A student who successfully completes 240 class hours in the MAS Program in Peace, Development and International Conflict Management will receive a Certificate in Peace, Development and International Conflict Management from the University of Innsbruck (§ 27 UniStG). This Certificate can be transferred as well by the ECTS.

Structure of terms

Each term is divided into four modular periods. The first modular period of any term is reserved for an introductory course in peace and development studies that all students attend. The second modular period offers three separate courses each, of which a student may choose one. Each course is taught three hours per day, five days a week. One of these three courses may be taught in German. The third modular period offers a one-week lecture series of 4 hours every morning plus a daily four-hour's conversation with the lecturers of the morning. The fourth modular period offers again three separate courses, of which students may choose one. This course is taught 4.5 hours per day in two weeks. Students must also attend an Integrative Seminar, presented by different groups of students each week, which provides comparative discussion of the different cultures or research interests with which students are most familiar.

Academic Requirments and Assessment

    Reading Requirements
Students are required to complete all daily assigned readings and any other assignments as indicated by each professor. This amounts to approximately 20 pages per day.

    Course papers
For each course a student enrolls in, a course essay of 5-10 pages must be completed one week after the final day of class. Papers are assessed and graded by the course instructor.

    Term papers
At the end of each term, students complete a term paper of 20-25 pages, which draws on issues raised in the classes and integrative seminars, in consultation with a faculty member of their choice. This is due one month after the end of the term.

    Masters Thesis
When the above requirements are successfully completed, MA students choose a thesis advisor. In consultation with the advisor, the student pursues a research topic for the MA thesis (80-100 pages). The student must present an official letter to the Director, approved by the advisor, proposing a title for the thesis. When the thesis advisor approves the final draft of the thesis, the Director appoints a review committee. The committee awards the degree following the positive assessment.

Frequently asked Questions

Q: What exactly is "Peace and Development Studies"?

A: There is no single answer to this question. Peace Studies is a very large and diverse field, and it may best be described as a perspective from which to view more traditional academic subjects in the social sciences. It also contains some unique fields of study, such as conflict analysis, conflict management and peace theory. Each student can approach peace studies in his or her own way, concentrating on concrete conflicts, sociological analyses, or regional issues, to name a few. Since the road to peace is often hindered by problems of resources and distribution, we also emphasise the importance of the relationship between peace and development.

Q: How long would it take to get my MAS degree through this program?

A: Students are required to successfully complete 3 terms and a thesis in order to receive their degree. Currently, the University of Innsbruck operates only 1 term per year, but our affiliates in Spain and Mexico offer 2 terms per year as well. Opportunities will soon open up in other areas. Thus, given student´s participation in more than one center, it is possible to complete the degree within one year.

Q: Who are the faculty of this program?

A: We want to provide a diverse and highly qualified faculty for our students. Therefore, we seek out the most successful professors and practioners from around the world to teach in our program. In recent years our global network has been searching for the most qualified faculty from Africa, Latin America and Asia, in order to provide our students with a broader perspective of Peace, Development and Conflict Management.

Q: What kind of class schedule will I have when I study?

A: Students have a minimum of 3 hours of class every weekday. Class hours vary from modular period to modular period, due to lecture series, seminars, integrative seminars or excurses. Finally 180 class hours have do be attended in one term of seven weeks.

Q: What kind of job will this prepare me for?

A: This entirely depends on your concentration within peace studies. Unlike more specific subjects (i.e. nursing, accounting or education), a degree in peace studies will not prepare you for one specific job. Students of the global network have gone on to study at the doctoral level, work in various NGOs, various government ministries, international organisations such as the UN or OSCE, community development and cross-border issues.
