William C. Eacho, Ambassador of the United States to Austria On January 13th, 2012 the Management Center Innsbruck invited Ambassador William C. Eacho, III to give a speech about the "Green Economy: International Opportunities". Most recently, Ambassador Eacho was CEO of Carlton Capital Group, LLC and Executive Vice President of Alliant Foodservice Inc. Mr. Eacho was the founding co-Chairman of UniPro Foodservice, Inc. and Chairman of ComSource, an industry cooperative. In his talk, Ambassador Eacho stated that climate change mitigation measures need not necessarily present a threat to trade and industry. There would be more negative consequences from continued uncertainty with regard to future developments and new legislation confronting businesses, to which they would have to respond. The road map agreed at the UN climate change summit in Durban, he continued, will overcome this uncertainty and give businesses urgently needed security for their future decisions and investments. Ambassador Eacho also emphasized the absolute need for international cooperation in the field of climate protection: “No country can address this challenge alone.” The USA, he added, has already made good progress on questions of the environment and climate, including an emphasis on innovative technologies, improved recycling systems, and new efficiency and exhaust emission regulations, which are already starting to bear fruit. On the question of the economic sense and ethical acceptability of bioethanol production, Ambassador Eacho said that, in the long term, there should be a reduction in production from grain and a corresponding focus on substitutes so as to take the pressure off prices on the food markets. With regard to his stay in Austria, Ambassador Eacho was clearly enthusiastic about Austrian culture. On a more jocular note, he admitted his surprise at “the extent to which skiing occupies the minds and hearts of the Austrians!”
