The exploitation of patents and management of intellectual property rights are subjects which currently tend to receive only marginal treatment in the fields of technology, economics and law, and correspondingly little or only unsystematical attention in continuous education and training programs. And yet international licenses and patents are increasingly becoming a key component of corporate strategy and economic thinking with the aim of enhancing the economic strength of a region and its viability as a business or industrial location. This is reflected in both the increasing numbers of patents registered and the growing interest shown in the subject. At the present time, however, such activities are mostly focused exclusively on the protection aspect for inventions and new products. Greater strategic importance must be attached to a pro-active approach to patent work as an investment in the future in terms of profitability. Emphasis must be placed on achieving sustainable competitive advantages and consolidating the region involved as a business and/or industrial location. |
