. Can I choose courses from different degree programs? No, because this would lead to conflicts between courses (and as attendance is mandatory at MCI, it would not be possible to pass the courses). Therefore, exchange students can only choose courses from ONE degree program and/or courses from our International Program. Can I choose courses from different semesters but from the same degree program? This is possible but not recommended due to conflicts between courses that may arise and different levels of instruction. Can I add/drop courses once the semester has started? Yes. Students are free to add or drop courses during the first two weeks of the semester. After the add-and-drop period, students may no longer add or drop courses due to organizational reasons. Can I get a scholarship for my exchange semester? Usually, exchange students need to apply for a scholarship in their home country (e.g. Erasmus scholarship). MCI does not offer scholarships to exchange students. However, there is an Austrian scholarship for incoming students from outside of Europe:"Ernst Mach Grant for studying at an Austrian university of applied sciences (Fachhochschule)". Exchange students who are taking master level courses or who have alredy completed two years of university education are eligible for this scholarship. For more information on scholarships, please go to www.grants.at. This database provides up-to-date information for almost all scholarships available in Austria. What language requirements do I have to fulfill? A very good command of the language of instruction is necessary. For courses taught in English we usually don't ask for any formal proof of your language skills. If you want to take courses taught in German, MCI will schedule a telephone interview with you in order to test your proficiency in German. Only if your ability to speak and understand German is very good, is it possible for you to take courses taught in German. Do I have to pay for photocopies, textbooks, and study materials? Yes. As an exchange student from one of our partner universities you don't have to pay tuition fees at MCI but you still have to pay for study materials. In some degree programs you have to make the photocopies yourself or your study materials are put online for you to download. Other degree programs will forward the photocopies to you. Are there any other fees for exchange students? Yes. Every student enrolled in an Austrian university or university of applied sciences is automatically a member of the Austrian Student Union (Österreichische HochschülerInnenschaft - ÖH). This also applies to incoming exchange students. Therefore you need to pay a membership fee of approx. EUR 18 per semester. In addition, students are required to pay an administrative fee of approximatley EUR 25 before the beginning of the semester. MCI offers activities for students during the semester (e.g. trips to other cities). If you participate in these activities, there is also a fee involved. When will I have my last exam? This largely depends on the courses you choose - so we cannot tell you in advance when your last exam will be exactly. Therefore, you should only make travel arrangements for your journey back home once you know when your last exam will be. Usually, all exams take place during regular semester times - retake exams, however, may take place after the end of the semester. How often am I allowed to retake an exam? Twice. However, the dates for the retake exams are often after the end of the official semester; so you would need to come back to Innsbruck to retake your exam. You can only retake an exam if you have failed your first exam but not in order to improve positive grades. When will I get my transcript? We will send your transcript, i.e. your grades, directly to the international office at your home university. This may take up to two months after the semester has officially ended. Students can check their grades online beforehand. |
