Nationals of EU/EEA countries and Switzerland ... do not need a visa for entering Austria. However, they do need a valid travel document (passport or identity card). If they are staying in Austria for more than three months, they have to apply for a confirmation of registration once they are here. For more information, please see OeAD's website (link below). Nationals of all other countries (so-called "third countries") ... need a residence visa and/or residence permit depending on how long they are planning to stay in Austria. If they stay between ninety-one days and six months, as most exchange students do, they need a residence visa D (Aufenthaltsvisum D). Exceptions may apply (e.g. Japanese nationals). The residence visa D also entitles students to travel to other Schengen countries for up to ninety days. Visas cannot be extended while students are in Austria. Students staying in Austria for more than six months, need a residence permit. Students have to apply for a visa/residence permit in person at the Austrian Embassy or Consulate-General in their home country prior to coming to Austria. Processing may take up to several months, which is why we recommend that students apply for a visa/residence permit as soon as possible. For more information, please see OeAD's website (link below). All students need vaild health insurance throughout their stay in Austria, and have to register at the local registration office within three business days after arriving in Austria. For more information on entry and visa regulations, please see OeAD's website. |
