In highly developed societies, the subject of food and beverages is about far more than nutrient uptake. It encompasses such phenomena as today’s Grafik-LRT-englischincreasingly common food intolerances on the one hand, and booming demand for functional and convenience foods as well as lifestyle product marketing on the other. At the same time, low price levels threatening the very existence of many farmers stand in marked contrast to today’s high prices on the global food and bioresource markets.

Since fossil resources are limited, alternatives must be found to the fossil and mineral raw materials that have been so readily available to date. This development constitutes a global challenge offering enormous opportunities for an industry whose production processes require creative management – from near-natural agricultural commodities to high-grade food products that are in demand worldwide.

In order to create economic and ecological benefits for society, the mutual relationships, e.g. between food and bioresource technologies on the one hand and the resulting products on the other, must be subjected to a professional assessment and innovative solutions found for the problems involved.

With this study program and the related Master in Bioresource & Food Engineering, which starts in 2014, MCI is preparing the ground for progress in the field by promoting innovation, know-how and the international orientation of what is literally a basic industry.
