Overview
The Master's degree program in Environmental, Process and Energy Engineering offers you practical engineering training and provides you with comprehensive knowledge to design both existing plants and new concepts sustainably. Supplementary content from business and law make the Master's program a scientifically sound and internationally applicable course. The degree program is offered in English in the full-time organizational form and in German in the part-time form. In the part-time version, selected courses are also taught in English.
The program focuses on developing, implementing, monitoring and continuous optimization of process engineering processes as well as the use of new technologies with a particular focus on the fields of energy technology and environmental technology.
In this sense, process engineering is combined with other engineering fields. The program also covers management, innovation, and law. Scientific and industrial project work is carried out as part of the courses, with a central focus on the solution of problems related to the industry.

Admission
Applications for admission are accepted on a rolling basis. The required documents are to be submitted online. Applicants are welcome to apply for multiple programs of study, as long as a plausible rationale is given. The final decision may be taken by the end of the application procedures.

The Masters program in Environmental, Process & Energy Engineering is open to graduates of relevant Bachelors programs and graduates from other recognized and relevant post-secondary educational facilities.
Applications for the English Master's program (full-time) do not require proof of language proficiency, as English skills are checked during the admission procedure. If you have already obtained language certificates, they can be submitted as part of the online application process.
Recognition of previous qualifications in the master program:
Applications for recognition of examinations or credits obtained through other study programs or previous scientific experience must be submitted to the Program Director. A decision will only be taken in cases where the application for admission has met with a positive decision. Recognition of credits or previous experience is only granted for individual classes in the program.

Step 1 – Online application: CV & motivation
A complete online application consists of a CV, a letter of motivation, information on educational background, qualifications, professional career, social achievements and academic as well as professional goals. We would like to know why you are applying to study at MCI.
You may apply for more than one degree program at the same time, provided you can conclusively explain your respective motivations in your letter of motivation.
Step 2 – Online admission interview
In the second step, all applicants will be invited to an online admission interview.
In this interview, we want to get to know you. We are particularly interested in your motivation to study at MCI as well as your professional and personal goals you want to achieve with the help of your studies.
Within three weeks after the admission interview, we will inform you about the admission decision.

Specializations
By choosing respective areas of specialization, the students of the program can deepen their interests and obtain advanced knowledge of Plant Engineering and Operations, Chemical Engineering, Energy Engineering, or Environmental Engineering.
Specialization Plant Engineering
The Plant Engineering and Operations module represents one of the core areas of modern process engineering. Subjects to be discussed here are automation engineering, logistics, and plant design, with a particular focus on computer-aided design.
Specialization Chemical Engineering
Chemical Engineering is positioned at the intersection of chemistry and process engineering, thus, addressing central issues of industrial scale-up, chemical product design, advanced catalysis, and polymer chemistry.
Specialization Energy Engineering
The Energy Engineering module provides students with advanced knowledge of technologies for the efficient, safe, environmentally friendly, and economic conversion, storage, and utilization of all forms of energy.
Specialization Environmental Engineering
Environmental Engineering deals with technical procedures for the protection of the environment and the development of respective technological measures. The general focus is, thus, on water and air pollution control, residual waste treatment, and systems analyses.

The Master program Environmental, Process & Energy Engineering is a full-time or part-time degree program.
Full-time
In full-time studies, lectures and seminars are held on weekdays, with blocked units allowing for an intensive immersion into individual topics.
Part-time
A part-time study program is organized in such a way that students can pursue full-time employment.
Electives
The electives take place at the times indicated under “Module overview > Facts > Time model & language (subject to change).
The Double Degree Program offers students the option to – in addition to MCI’s Master’s degree – obtain a second degree from Università degli Studi di Genova. Students completing this special program acquire advanced knowledge in the field of energy and chemical engineering while gaining experience abroad. The length of studies increases from four to five semesters.
Comments on the Double Degree Programme
Graduates of the program are conferred the academic title of Master of Science in Engineering, in short MSc or M.Sc. This is attested by a leaving certificate, the Master diploma, the international diploma supplement, and further documents where relevant.*

Yes, it is possible and even recommended that you apply before obtaining your Bachelor’s Degree certificate in order to secure one of the limited spots in your desired course of study. Please include the most recent transcript of records in your application. Should your application be successful, the Bachelor’s certificate is to be submitted by the start of your studies.
Multiple applications are welcome, as long as a plausible reason is provided in your cover letter. If you are admitted to two or more study programs, you are required to inform us of your final decision by the conclusion of the application procedures.
Yes, this is easily possible via the digital admission interview.
For citizens of the following countries, the tuition fee is EUR 363,36 per semester plus a fee for compulsory membership to the Austrian National Union of Students:
EU citizens,
EEA and Swiss citizens, and
non-EU citizens who, according to § 2 of the University of Applied Sciences Studies Act, are subject to § 1 of the Regulation on Eligible Groups of Persons (see Federal Law Gazette II No. 340/2013, in its current version).
For students of non-EU countries not considered eligible according to above regulations, the tuition fee is as follows:
Bachelor’s programs: 7,500 euros / semester plus compulsory Austrian National Union of Students membership fee
Master’s programs: 7,500 euros / semester plus compulsory Austrian National Union of Students membership fee
Your application documents regarding nationality will be assessed in detail as part of your admission procedure. Scholarships are available for applicants from non-EU countries and can be applied for as part of your online application.
Students of this study program have the choice within their curriculum, but also as part of their extracurricular activities, to choose between modules, specializations, additional courses, electives, etc. As a student of Environmental, Process & Energy Engineering, you can attend numerous lectures by relevant personalities from associated fields free of charge (Distinguished Guest Lectures, events in the study program, etc.). Additionally, the semester abroad at one of our numerous partner universities as well as projects and final papers, enable our students to make their study program a truly unique experience.

Attendance is mandatory in all classes. If you miss 25% of a course or more, this will have an effect on your final grade.
Exemption from mandatory attendance may be granted if a valid reason is given (e.g. sickness, visit to authorities or other personal reasons). Please submit your written request including relevant proof to the department for approval.
Yes, in the full-time Master’s program, all courses are held in English. The specialization subjects, which are the same for both full-time and part-time students, are also held in English. In the third semester, Master students may spend a semester abroad at any of the partner institutions of their department. The prerequisites for this will be communicated to you in due time.
No, employment is not a mandatory prerequisite for part-time studies, but is, however, recommended as it facilitates practical insight and enables application of the studied content.
Furthermore, students are not obliged to work in a related subject during their part-time studies, but gaining valuable practical experience in relevant fields while studying is still recommended.
Students choose the organizational form to be taken before the start of their studies. For organizational reasons, a change of organizational form is only possible in exceptional cases and only at the start of a new semester.
Students choose their desired specialization prior to commencing their studies. Due to the different content of the fields of specialization available, it is not possible to change specializations during studies.
Yes, in the Master’s program, the third semester is considered an international semester. This offers you the opportunity to complete a semester abroad at one of our numerous partner institutions. However, the integrated semester abroad is not mandatory; the international semester can also be spent at MCI.
Yes, working in the laboratory requires that the necessary safety guidelines and precautions be observed and that the safety instructions of the course lecturer be followed. For this reason, an obligatory safety briefing takes place at the beginning of each course, which all students are required to attend without exception. The date for the safety briefing is determined by the relevant department.
Master students have the opportunity to apply for a double degree program. This program comprises five semesters of study, including Master’s thesis and Master’s examination. The first two semesters are completed at MCI, while the second two semesters are spent at Università degli Studi di Genova, Italy. The last semester takes place either at MCI or at Università degli Studi di Genova. Upon successful completion of the double degree program, students receive the academic degrees of Master of Science in Engineering (MCI) and Laurea Magistrale of Energy Engineering (Centria University of Applied Sciences). The focus of the program is on energy engineering and chemical engineering.
Yes, the academic degree is recognized in Italy due to a grade conversion agreement (“Notenwechsel”) starting May 1, 2026.
