Management Center Innsbruck is a university with a business focus and an international orientation where the motivated are empowered to provide customers and partners with the very best.
Foundation and objective The foundation of the MCI was proposed by the University of Innsbruck at the beginning of the 1990s in the context of the further development of the Faculty of Social and Economic Sciences and the construction of a new faculty building. It was part of a basic concept for an open university comprising the following modules:
In this initial phase the MCI’s offering comprised part-time continuous education programs for decision-makers (non-degree courses, seminars, company training programs, symposiums) to complement the degree courses offered by the University of Innsbruck. Following the introduction of the Austrian Fachhochschule Studies Act (FHStG) and the establishment of separate universities of applied sciences in Austria, the MCI strategy was modified in order to achieve recognition as a university of applied sciences and introduce appropriate study programs, albeit restricted to part-time courses. With the subsequent creation of a diploma program in Business & Management in 1996, the MCI developed into a full-service provider of part-time courses for decision-makers, with an offering ranging from one-day seminars to four-year diploma programs, while full-time programs remained the preserve of Innsbruck University. In 2000 the decision was taken within the organizations represented on the governing body to make the MCI responsible for all university of applied science programs in the Tyrol (except those in Kufstein) with the result that the part-time diploma program in Environment & Process Engineering established in 1988 and the Tourism & Leisure Management diploma program then undergoing accreditation were transferred to the MCI. The latter was also originally developed as a primarily part-time program, but an application was lodged to modify the mode of study, and in the course of the Tyrolean IT offensive launched in 2002 the governing body of the MCI finally decided that full-time study programs should be offered, too (starting with diploma programs in Management & IT and Management & Law). In consultation with the University of Innsbruck and the organizations represented on the MCI’s governing body, the MCI subsequently developed and introduced the range of full- and part-time study programs based on Austrian law for universities and universities of applied sciences that are available at the MCI today. |
