As part of the Distinguished Guest Lecture Series, MCI | The Entrepreneurial School® welcomed Arthur G. Fisher, U.S. Ambassador to Austria. The event was held in cooperation with the Universität Innsbruck, the Industriellenvereinigung Tirol, and the Wirtschaftskammer Tirol.
Following the welcome by MCI Rector Andreas Altmann, Max Kloger, President of the Industriellenvereinigung Tirol, and Dirk Rupnow, Vice Rector of the University of Innsbruck, addressed the audience, emphasizing the importance of transatlantic exchange at both the economic and academic levels.
At the center of the lecture was the “American Entrepreneurial Mindset” as outlined by Ambassador Fisher. He described it as a combination of long-term thinking, openness to change, and the courage to pursue strategic transformation. Entrepreneurial success, he noted, often emerges in times of uncertainty. As a compelling example, Fisher referred to the transformation of Netflix from a DVD-by-mail service into a globally leading streaming platform and content producer.
Personal insights from his own family real estate business in North Carolina reinforced this perspective. While the pandemic initially caused significant concern, it ultimately became the most prosperous period in the company’s 50-year history — underscoring his central message that major challenges can create unexpected opportunities.
Ambassador Fisher also highlighted the importance of family businesses, both in the United States and in Austria. During his visit to Tyrol, he met with several leading regional companies, including Delfort, Rauch, and Swarco, and expressed his admiration for the strong presence of family-owned enterprises in the region.
Addressing global developments — from evolving security challenges to technological transformation — Fisher stressed the close and enduring relationship between the United States and Europe. A strong and prosperous Europe, he emphasized, is an essential partner in trade, innovation, and security.
In the subsequent discussion, students as well as representatives from business and academia engaged in an open exchange on competitiveness, innovation, and the future of transatlantic cooperation.
