Hans-Joachim Eckert founded the Sports Governance Unit in 2017 and offers consulting in the area of compliance and good governance in sport.

From 2013 to 2017 he was chairman of the judicial chamber of the FIFA Ethics Committee. In this capacity, he initiated proceedings against the then top officials Joseph Blatter and Michel Platini, which led to suspensions lasting several years and subsequently to resignations.
