Rocco Bräuniger, Country Manager DACH at Amazon, on strategy, technology, and the challenges facing a global tech leader.
How does one of the world’s largest technology companies not only preserve its innovative edge but actively drive it forward? This was the central question addressed during the Distinguished Guest Lecture at MCI with Rocco Bräuniger. The long-standing Amazon executive provided hands-on insights into the company’s philosophy, ways of working, and technological developments – all guided by the principle: “Run the company like it's day one.”
New Opportunities with GenAI
Amazon has relied on artificial intelligence for several years, using it in areas such as demand forecasting and delivery route optimization. With the rise of Generative AI (GenAI), the company is undergoing a paradigm shift. “While traditional AI analyzes data and supports decision-making, GenAI creates content and opens up new possibilities for customer experiences,” Bräuniger explained.
Examples like voice assistants, interactive shopping advisors, or AI-enhanced customer reviews illustrate how Amazon is already applying GenAI today. The focus, however, is not solely on the technology itself but also on educating users: “We need to prepare our customers to recognize and harness the potential of these tools.”
Innovation Through Failure
“If you already know something is going to work, it’s not innovation,” Bräuniger emphasized. Failure, he said, is an integral part of the innovation process. To conclude, Bräuniger shared personal reflections on his own career path and offered practical advice to students: “There are so many exciting opportunities out there. What matters is to keep learning, build networks – and enjoy what you are doing.”
