As part of the Distinguished Guest Lecture Series at MCI, Saori Dubourg addressed the pressing challenges of our time. Under the guiding principle "The Future is Up to Us," she called on the audience to take responsibility and actively help shape the future. Politics alone, Dubourg emphasized, will not solve the problems – it is up to each and every one of us.

Responsibility begins with ourselves

Dubourg described a world out of balance, marked by geopolitical conflicts, environmental crises, and technological disruptions. For future-proof leadership, it is essential to act today with tomorrow in mind.

"We are not only responsible for what we do, but also for what we don't do," Dubourg stressed. Her appeal: Don't wait for political decisions or global agreements, but act where you can make a difference. Europe, in particular, with its innovative strength and values-based approach, has the potential to play a leading role in technology-driven future markets – provided it acts with determination and clarity.

Rethinking leadership

In the subsequent discussion with the audience, Dubourg shared insights into her transition from a DAX-listed corporation to a family-owned company. What matters, she said, is not the size of an organization, but its attitude and willingness.

When asked what advice she would give to young people, Dubourg highlighted three key aspects: First, it is worthwhile to think of one’s career “from the end” – who do you want to be at the end of your professional life? Second, developing connected thinking is crucial, and interests such as art or philosophy can be valuable resources in this regard. Finally, diverse experiences and perspectives gained through different career stages are essential in shaping a holistic leadership personality.

Dubourg concluded with a powerful invitation to the audience: "Own the future. Change what matters to you." Her lecture offered not only analytical depth, but above all: inspiration and a compelling call to view responsibility not as a burden, but as an opportunity.
