With a lecture by Michael Losch, Coordinator for Bioeconomy at the Directorate-General for Agriculture and Rural Development of the European Commission, MCI officially opened this year’s Sustainability Week – a week dedicated to sustainable transformation and interdisciplinary collaboration.
MCI Rector Andreas Altmann and René Zumtobel, Tyrolean Councillor for Transport, Environment and Nature Conservation, welcomed the guests and emphasized the importance of universities as places of interdisciplinary exchange between science, business and politics in order to jointly develop sustainable solutions to global challenges.
Following the opening remarks, Michael Losch’s lecture entitled “The EU Bioeconomy Strategy: Contributing to Climate Neutrality, Sustainability and Competitiveness” took center stage. Losch outlined global developments in the energy and raw materials sectors and linked them to the strategic objectives of the European Union. Despite growing climate protection efforts, the worldwide consumption of fossil resources continues to rise – particularly in sectors such as chemicals, steel, cement and plastics. These basic materials account for a significant share of global CO₂ emissions and clearly illustrate the urgency for action.
According to Losch, the European Bioeconomy Strategy is therefore intended as a key building block on the path towards climate neutrality by 2050. Its goal is to combine economic competitiveness with sustainability while simultaneously promoting innovation in a targeted way. He also stressed the importance of reliable framework conditions without burdening companies with excessive bureaucracy.
The strategy focuses in particular on bio-based materials and technologies, including plastics, packaging, textiles and bio-based fertilizers. Losch sees considerable potential for bio-based solutions especially within the agricultural sector. The key challenge now, he emphasized, is to scale up innovation, strengthen investments and expand international partnerships in order to successfully drive the transformation in the long term.
