Austria in the World: Event with Beate Meinl-Reisinger

Federal Minister Beate Meinl-Reisinger in Conversation with MCI Students, Alumni & Friends in Innsbruck

As part of its Distinguished Guest Lecture Series, MCI welcomed Beate Meinl-Reisinger, Federal Minister for European and International Affairs, to Innsbruck.

In a conversation with MCI Rector Andreas Altmann, students, alumni, and friends of MCI, the Federal Minister discussed current international developments and key issues in Austrian foreign and European policy. Topics included Austria’s neutrality, European defense, migration, and Austria’s and the European Union’s place in a world shaped by multiple crises and rapid change.

The conversation also focused on Austria’s role in European defense policy and the importance of peace, dialogue, and diplomacy. “It must never be an option not to talk to one another,” Meinl-Reisinger emphasized, highlighting the importance of dialogue even in difficult times.

Between Crisis and Optimism

Climate change, war, artificial intelligence, and rising energy prices are shaping the world we live in and creating new challenges for society. Today’s generation is growing up with a range of crises that previous generations did not experience in the same way, Meinl-Reisinger noted. The key question, she said, is how we respond: with fear and withdrawal, or with confidence and a willingness to take responsibility.

She also emphasized the importance of an active civil society. One of the biggest challenges for democracies is not only political developments or competing narratives, but also people becoming less engaged. Politics and political parties cannot sustain democracy on their own – active participation from citizens is essential.

Especially in challenging times, she said, it is important to have a clear view of reality while also remaining hopeful and optimistic. “I believe in the power of people,” said Meinl-Reisinger, highlighting the importance of individual responsibility and the ability of society to shape its future.
