Social Work students promote acceptance and language skills in German training

As part of the course “Project Work: Sexual Identity and Orientation” in the bachelor's program in Social Work, the students Maiia Troianova and Sofia Falvo developed and implemented a workshop on sexual orientation, identity, and diversity. The interactive workshop was carried out in cooperation with the association BEZIEHUNGSWEISE LERNEN and was aimed at people with a migration background who attend german courses there.

Based on the assumption that topics such as tolerance and respectful coexistence are relevant to the target group both socially and linguistically, a varied concept was created. The workshop combined theoretical content with playful, language-promoting, and interactive exercises. Terms and concepts related to sexual orientation, gender identity, and diversity were conveyed in an understandable and everyday manner.

The participants explored values such as acceptance, openness, and equality. The fact that some of the content covered may also appear in the ÖIF test proved to be an added bonus.

The workshop was very well received by the participants, both in terms of content and methodology. For the two students, the project was a valuable experience that shows how low-threshold educational opportunities can contribute to greater awareness, understanding, and participation. From the students' point of view, it would be desirable to continue or further develop the workshop format.

Statement from the project group

"Our goal was to convey knowledge in an understandable way, break down prejudices, and make language learning fun. It was particularly important to us to create a safe space where questions could be asked and uncertainties openly addressed. We wanted to show that diversity is a natural part of our everyday lives and that mutual respect forms the basis for good coexistence. The positive feedback from the participants has encouraged us to continue expanding such educational offerings in the future."
