In the first week of September 2025, 20 motivated students commenced their technology studies at the newly launched MCI campus in Lienz, East Tyrol. Most of the first-semester students hail from East, North, and South Tyrol, with seven from Germany and one from Carinthia. Courses are taught by MCI professors and lecturers, and are complemented by industry experts from leading East Tyrolean companies such as Liebherr, Hella, and Micado.
During a dedicated Welcome Day, Site Manager Mag. Hansjörg Jaufenthaler and team member Vanessa Ebenberger welcomed the three female and seventeen male students to the new university location in Lienz. “We are thrilled to see the campus come alive again,” says Jaufenthaler. “Our mission is to offer high-quality technical education locally and to strengthen East Tyrol as a hub for innovation. We aim to retain local talent and also attract students from outside the region.”
Dr. Cornelia Hagele, Tyrolean Minister for Science, Education, Health and Care: “Once again, MCI demonstrates what it is capable of achieving through collective effort. Tyrol can only remain competitive internationally by investing in top talent and developing innovative products, processes, technologies, and business models. I thank the dedicated MCI team for their outstanding commitment.”
Mag. Michaela Hysek-Unterweger, Chair of the East Tyrol Chamber of Commerce: “For the Lienz district, its economy, and its people, today marks the realization of a long-held dream. With MCI as a reliable partner, known for its academic excellence, professional infrastructure, and unparalleled network, we are confident in the future of this campus.”
Prof. Dr. Werner Stadlmayr, Coordinator of Engineering Programs at MCI: “Our innovative concept of offering the first year of several engineering degree programs in Lienz has proven to be absolutely the right decision. This was made possible by an intensive accreditation process and the successful acquisition of federally funded study places.”
Prof. Dr. Martin Pillei, Head of Research & Transfer at MCI: “With 20 students selected from 35 applicants, we have met our ambitious targets. This marks the beginning of their journey toward high-skilled careers in research, technology, innovation, and entrepreneurship.”
Mag. Oswald Wolkenstein, Chair of the MCI Supervisory Board: “Once again, MCI showcases its capabilities and significant value to the region. In addition to the Lienz campus, it is now more urgent than ever to realize a new main campus in Innsbruck. Education, research, and innovation are not luxury items—they are vital to securing our future.”
MCI Rector Prof. Dr. Andreas Altmann concluded: "It is impressive to see what our team has accomplished in such a short time to re-establish the Lienz campus. With this study program, we are providing access to excellent technical education, fostering future-oriented skills, and strengthening the entrepreneurial potential of East Tyrol and the region. In addition to our outstanding team, I would like to extend my special thanks to all supporters and partners, and not least to the Austrian Ministry of Science and AQ Austria for supporting this innovative study model."
Innovative MCI Program with Base in Lienz
The newly developed bachelor’s degree starts with a comprehensive foundation in engineering sciences at the MCI campus in Lienz. From the third semester onward, students continue their studies in Innsbruck, choosing from one of four specializations: Mechatronics, Medical, Health & Sports Engineering, Environmental, Process & Energy Engineering, or Industrial Engineering & Management.
With a cohort of 20 students, the Lienz campus offers a close-knit academic environment conducive to intensive learning. After their first year, students move on to Innsbruck and can complete their internship semester and final thesis in cooperation with companies based in East Tyrol.
Two of the four specialization tracks are available as part-time programs, allowing students to combine work and study while residing in East Tyrol throughout the entire program. The study model also includes the option for a semester abroad, innovative practical projects, case studies, top-tier guest lectures, and supplemental online learning formats.
