From projects to partnership: expanded collaboration boosts applied research, teaching & career opportunities in Medical, Health & Sports Engineering

MCI | The Entrepreneurial School® and the Human Performance Institute MOTUM are taking their longstanding collaboration to the next level by signing a strategic cooperation agreement. The partnership marks a significant step toward strengthening applied research, teaching, and career pathways.

MOTUM is a leading European institute at the intersection of science and application, combining cutting-edge biomechanical research with practical motion analysis in elite and amateur sports as well as rehabilitation. With its innovative study and research programs in Medical, Health & Sports Engineering, MCI has successfully filled an important gap in western Austria and continues to experience strong demand in this field.

The cooperation builds on a years-long collaboration between MCI, MOTUM, and the Innsbruck-based orthopedic clinic Gelenkpunkt. Together, they have implemented several joint research projects, academic publications, teaching activities, and numerous bachelor’s and master’s theses.

Now formalized through the newly signed agreement, the partnership will deepen, systematize, and expand this successful cooperation. It will offer MCI students – particularly those in the Department of Medical & Health Technologies – attractive opportunities for internships, thesis projects, and research collaboration. In turn, MOTUM gains access to cutting-edge academic expertise, top student talent, and MCI’s international university network.

The partnership reinforces the crucial bridge between science and application in future-oriented fields such as sports technology, sports medicine, rehabilitation, and motion analysis.

“MOTUM provides our students and researchers with access to state-of-the-art lab technologies, real-world challenges, and an interdisciplinary team of outstanding experts. This close link to practice enables direct knowledge transfer and tangible entry points into the industry. We deeply value our partnership with MOTUM and look forward to continuing our successful collaboration,” emphasizes Prof. Bernhard Hollaus, PhD, Deputy Head of the Medical, Health & Sports Engineering program and Head of Sports & Health Tech Research at MCI.

Simon Wörgötter MSc, Head of Laboratory at MOTUM, adds: “MCI stands for strong technical expertise, innovation, and a hands-on approach in both research and teaching. The professional exchange is extremely valuable to us, as we directly benefit from the university’s technological know-how and forward-thinking mindset.”
