As in previous years, MCI Rector Andreas Altmann is once again holding a visiting professorship at the University of California, Berkeley. His visit includes guest lectures, panel discussions, joint Distinguished Guest Lectures, and intensive exchange with students, faculty members, and department directors.
At the core of the visit is the promotion of academic dialogue between the United States and Europe, the strengthening of Tyrol’s international positioning as a hub for research, science, and innovation within Europe, and the continued deepening of the partnership between UC Berkeley and MCI.
The visiting professorship is part of a memorandum signed in 2023 between MCI and UC Berkeley, which includes collaboration in teaching, research, and events, as well as international exchange formats and summer schools.
As part of the prestigious MCI Distinguished Guest Lecture Series, MCI Rector Andreas Altmann, together with Jeroen Dewulf and Susan Giesecke (UC Berkeley), welcomes EU Commissioner for International Affairs and Migration Magnus Brunner.
Under the title “How Can USA & Europe Win Together?”, the event explores key questions of transatlantic cooperation, highlighting both shared challenges and promising opportunities for Europe and the United States.
In another guest lecture followed by discussions, MCI Rector Andreas Altmann brings the “iconic region of Tyrol” to California, highlighting its unique location, its historically developed identity, and its significant potential in the fields of science, technology, and startups.
Andreas Altmann and former EU Commissioner Franz Fischler, together with Jeroen Dewulf (UC Berkeley) and Mark Vancauteren (Hasselt University), reflect on Tyrol’s past and present, as well as its strengths, challenges, and potentials. Special attention is also given to South Tyrol as an autonomous province in northern Italy and its connection to the European Region of Tyrol.
The joint events are supported by the Austrian Marshall Plan Foundation and the Austrian Consulate in San Francisco. At UC Berkeley, several departments are involved, including the Sutardja Center for Entrepreneurship & Technology, the Goldman School of Public Policy, the International House, and the Institute of European Studies.
