MCI Professorship Awarded to Matthias Janetschek

Date 2026-05-22

The Entrepreneurial School® confers Professorship on Matthias Janetschek

In recognition of his outstanding achievements in research and teaching, as well as his long-standing commitment especially to the further development of the Department of Digital Business & Software Engineering, MCI has awarded the title of Professor to Matthias Janetschek. During a ceremonial event attended by colleagues and long-time companions, he officially received the distinction. In his following inaugural lecture, he provided fascinating insights into current research on the security of Internet of Things (IoT) devices.

Matthias Janetschek began his academic career at the University of Innsbruck, where he successfully completed his doctoral studies in Computer Science, earning a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degree in the field of High Performance Computing.

Since 2018, he has been teaching at MCI and played a key role in the academic design and strategic development of the bachelor’s and master’s degree programs in Digital Business & Software Engineering. In his teaching, he equips students with future-oriented competencies in areas such as Databases & Big Data, Programming Techniques, Virtual Reality, and Software Engineering. In 2020, he was awarded the title of Associate Professor.

At the same time, Matthias Janetschek has dedicated himself intensively to applied research. His scientific focus areas include Embedded Systems, the Internet of Things, Virtual Reality, and IT Security. Since July 2023, he has been serving as Senior Researcher at the Josef Ressel Center for Security Analysis of IoT Devices at MCI.

In his inaugural lecture entitled “The Internet of (In)Secure Things – Automated Security Analysis of IoT Devices”, he addressed the growing security challenges of the Internet of Things. With nearly 20 billion connected devices worldwide and structural limitations such as highly restricted computing power and long product life cycles, traditional security methods are reaching their limits, especially as the EU Cyber Resilience Act will require mandatory security testing from December 2027 onward.

At the Josef Ressel Center, researchers are addressing this challenge through a largely automated testing pipeline: a semantic device model enables the automatic selection of relevant security test cases.
