Study Trip to Brussels

Students gain insights into the inner workings of the EU

From May 12 to 16, 2025, 17 students from the Bachelor’s degree program in Nonprofit, Social & Health Care Management (Since 2024 Social, Health & Public Management) embarked on a study trip to Brussels. The goal was to gain an in-depth understanding of the structure, functions, and political decision-making processes of the European Union.

The program offered students comprehensive insights into the EU’s key institutions, with a particular focus on social and health policy. Visits to the Permanent Representation of Austria in Brussels, the European Parliament, the Council of the European Union, and the European Commission impressively demonstrated how policy is shaped and adopted at the European level.

A highlight of the program was the panel discussion on the topic “Lobbying and Advocacy in the EU”, held at the representation of the Europaregion Tirol – Südtirol - Trentino. Together with experts, the students discussed how various interest groups influence political decision-making processes within the EU.

Another special highlight was the meeting with three alumni of the department who are now working in Brussels. By chatting with each other, the students gained valuable insights into possible career paths and learned firsthand how to successfully start a professional career in Brussels.

Beyond the official program, the importance of networking and informal learning became evident: an informal networking dinner with interns from various EU institutions provided an opportunity to discuss career opportunities, share experiences, and gather impressions and perspectives from young professionals currently working in Brussels.

The study trip concluded with a visit to the House of European History, which encouraged students to reflect on the historical development of the European Union and once again highlighted its lasting significance.

In summary, the study trip to Brussels was a successful blend of academic learning, practical insights, professional networking, and critical reflection..
