Alumni support students on their academic journey

The MCI Mentoring Program connects alumni with students seeking guidance and support on their academic and professional journey. The focus of the program is a long-term, trust-based exchange that combines personal coaching with professional networking. The program was initiated by the department of Nonprofit, Social & Health Care Management and has been running successfully for over 15 years.

Manuel and Ahmed, both graduates of the department, share their experiences as mentors:

What are the benefits of the mentoring program for you as a mentor?

Manuel: For me, mentoring is first and foremost about giving back – sharing experiences, insights, and guidance that can help students find their path into the professional world and successfully complete their master’s thesis. It’s an opportunity to give something back and stay connected with the younger generation. I find it truly rewarding to accompany students on their journey.

Ahmed: I really value the mentoring program because it allows me to further develop my coaching skills. This is also relevant to my professional life, as it helps me lead my team more effectively.

Why would you recommend the mentoring program to other alumni?

Ahmed: Engaging with students provides new insights and helps me better understand and support young talent.

Manuel: Mentoring is not a one-way street – you give, but you also receive a lot in return, such as fresh perspectives and opportunities for personal reflection.

What were the key challenges in the mentoring?

Ahmed: Everyone brings different experiences and skills to the table. That’s why it’s important to communicate openly and transparently about expectations.

Manuel: You don’t need to have all the answers – often, it’s enough to listen actively and simply be present.

How would you rate your overall mentoring experience?

Ahmed & Manuel: Overall, the experience has been excellent! The support offered by MCI – the website, the mentoring toolkit, and the regular email updates – is well thought out and helpful. It provides a solid framework, especially for new mentors.

The mentoring program is a true win-win situation: students benefit from experience, guidance, and a professional network, while mentors gain new perspectives and a deeper understanding of the next generation. By actively supporting young people, we not only strengthen individual careers but also our society as a whole.
