Sicherheit – Leben im Krisenmodus

As in previous years, this year’s Philosophicum for fourth-semester students of the program Nonprofit, Social & Health Care Management (renamed Social, Health & Public Management in 2024) was held as part of the MCI Sustainability Week.

The event explored the topic “Security – Living Under Constant Crisis” from a wide range of perspectives. It highlighted the complexity and pressing relevance of the issue — from security policy and military considerations to individual experiences and broader societal and global challenges. The question of security touches nearly every aspect of life.

The event opened with brief keynote statements from three experts: Univ.-Prof. Dr. Kathrin Sevecke addressed the psychological dimensions of safety and feelings of security, Major General (ret.) Nikolaus Egger MSD spoke about geopolitical tensions and security policy challenges for Europe, while Franz Steger-Künz BA MSc highlighted current developments in the fields of extremism, terrorism, and digital threats.

After the introductory talks, the discussion opened up in the form of a Fishbowl conversation: audience members were invited to move into the center of the discussion circle, share their views, and engage directly with the experts. Many students took this opportunity to speak openly about personal fears, societal insecurities, and the importance of trust in institutions. At the same time, positive developments and ideas for strengthening social cohesion were emphasized.

Particularly lively discussions emerged around the role of the media, the impact of personal experiences on individual perceptions of security, and the importance of open, fact-based debates for fostering a realistic awareness of security issues.

The event was perceived by all participants as highly valuable and enriching. It demonstrated the importance of open dialogue between experts and students and underlined how essential it remains to approach complex social topics like security holistically, interdisciplinary, and with openness.
