Two New Professors, Two Inspiring Perspectives on Intercultural Competence and Entrepreneurial Innovation

On October 22, 2026, Dr. Jason Chan and Priv.-Doz. Dr. Andreas Strobl were awarded professorships in recognition of their outstanding achievements in research and teaching. In their inaugural lectures, the two academics explored current challenges and developments in intercultural competence and the impact of artificial intelligence on entrepreneurship.

MCI Rector Prof. Dr. Andreas Altmann opened the ceremony, while Univ.-Prof. FH-Prof. Mag. Dr. Franz Pegger, Head of the Academic Board, presented the official appointment certificates. In his laudatory speeches, Prof. Priv.-Doz. Michael Razen, PhD, Head of Degree Programs and Department, highlighted the academic accomplishments and personal strengths of both professors.

Jason Chan: Advancing Intercultural Competence in Higher Education

How can intercultural competence be effectively taught in higher education? Dr. Jason Chan addressed this question in his inaugural lecture, “Aristotle didn’t have Slides: Teaching Intercultural Competence.” Through interactive exercises and practical examples, he demonstrated the importance of questioning personal perceptions, recognizing cultural differences, and looking beyond established stereotypes.

Chan emphasized that effective teaching goes far beyond simply transferring knowledge. Meaningful learning thrives on personal interaction, active student engagement, and the willingness to explore different perspectives.

Prof. Chan's research focuses on intercultural communication, language teaching, and language proficiency assessment. Drawing on his international experience, he combines linguistic and academic expertise with an interest in how people from different cultural backgrounds communicate and learn from one another. His expertise and commitment to teaching contribute to the international orientation of MCI's Department of Business & Management.

Andreas Strobl: Entrepreneurship in the Age of Artificial Intelligence

What opportunities does artificial intelligence create for entrepreneurship, and where are its limitations? Priv.-Doz. Dr. Andreas Strobl explored these questions in his inaugural lecture, “Entrepreneurship in Zeiten von KI – Eine Bestandsaufnahme und Forschungsagenda” (Entrepreneurship in the Age of AI – A Current Assessment and Research Agenda).

His lecture focused on the impact of artificial intelligence on entrepreneurship, innovation, and strategic decision-making. Strobl examined how AI can support entrepreneurial creativity and value creation, simplify certain tasks, and open up new opportunities. At the same time, he emphasized that sustainable competitive advantages continue to depend on independent thinking, human judgment, and the ability to develop innovative solutions.

Prof. Strobl's research focuses on entrepreneurship, strategy, and innovation. Following his academic work at the University of Innsbruck, his career took him to Lancaster University Management School in the United Kingdom, where he was involved in research and teaching, academic leadership, and degree program development.

With his international experience and extensive academic network, Strobl brings valuable expertise to MCI. His research explores how companies can leverage technological developments, drive innovation, and actively shape change.

By awarding these professorships, MCI recognizes the academic and professional achievements of Jason Chan and Andreas Strobl, as well as their dedication to research and teaching. With their distinct areas of expertise and international experience, both professors strengthen the Department of Business & Management.
