From July 31 to August 4, 2026, the Academy of Management (AOM) Annual Meeting brought together scholars from around the world in Philadelphia to share research, exchange ideas, and develop collaborations. Yevgen Bogodistov, Professor and researcher at MCI, took part in several sessions and activities throughout the conference. Two particular highlights were the presentation of his research and his role in leading the “Cognition in the Rough” Professional Development Workshop.
Yevgen Bogodistov’s research addresses a range of socially relevant topics, including teaching under extreme conditions. At AOM, he presented research on “Teaching in War-Impacted Classrooms” together with Professor Amanda Budde-Sung from the United States Air Force Academy.
In their presentation, “Teaching in War-Impacted Classrooms: Psychological Issues, Strategies, and Educators' Experience”, the two researchers drew on interviews with Ukrainian university instructors who continued teaching throughout the full-scale invasion. In some cases, they taught from shelters, with unstable electricity and internet access, and under direct threat.
Building on the Job Demands-Resources model, the researchers identified two distinct coping patterns among educators facing extreme and sustained demands. While some distanced themselves emotionally from the classroom, others leaned into their connections with students and colleagues. At the group level, this “approaching” strategy was associated with positive effects, strengthening cohesion among students and colleagues facing shared strain.
Alongside presenting his own research, Yevgen Bogodistov also contributed to the academic development of other researchers at AOM. Together with Professor Luis Martins from the University of Texas at Austin, he led the “Cognition in the Rough” Professional Development Workshop. The annual workshop provides scholars with an opportunity to present early-stage research, exchange ideas, and receive constructive feedback from experienced faculty and fellow researchers.
This year, Luis Martins and Yevgen Bogodistov worked with the authors of four submitted papers. The discussions focused on developing research ideas, challenging assumptions, exploring alternative perspectives, and helping the authors move their projects forward.
“It is not only about presenting your own research, but also about contributing to the development of other research projects and researchers. That is what makes academic conferences particularly meaningful to me,” says Yevgen Bogodistov.
Today, the Academy of Management has more than 20,000 members across 120 countries. The 2027 AOM Annual Meeting will take place in Vienna from July 30 to August 3.
