Being Queer?

Date 2022-08-05

Students deal with the question what role social work should play in the context of structural discrimination of the LGBTQIA+ community in Tyrol.

As part of the course "Human Rights and International Social Law", students of the Master's program "Social Work, Social Policy & Management at MCI | The Entrepreneurial School® dealt with issues related to the LGBTQIA+ community.

The aim was to raise awareness about the structural discrimination the community faces in Austria, what role Social Work should play in this context and what offers are available for LGBTQIA+ persons in Tyrol.

In this context, a series of posts were created by the students and published by the Social Work Department on Instagram during Pride Month.

SOGIE - an alternative for saying LGBTIQ*. Here, no individual groups are defined, but character traits that are part of each personality are outlined.

The last post in the series about LGBTQIA+, Human Rights and Social Work in Tyrol names a few already existing support services and community offers for queer people.

Student group statement:

„Finally, we want to mention, that all of this information is probably not complete and should be expanded in the future. As you can see, some support options are already available and some have been for a long time in Tyrol. But there are some gaps to fill. E.g., there is no queer youth center, which would be quite important, as the risk for queer youth to live on the streets is a lot higher compared to their peers. Furthermore, we suggest, that all public services should support queer people like any other, become safe places and raise awareness for the community!”
