Research findings promote cooperation between MCI and youth association work

The Bezirksjugendring Oberbayern has created a structure unique in Bavaria with its “diversity” department. With various thematic specialist units, it is sending a strong signal for participation and equal opportunities for young people in Bavaria.

Laura Feith González and Bastian Oechsle, both research assistants at the MCI department of Social Work, conducted an accompanying scientific study to examine how young people and cooperation partners use and accept the services offered and how effective they are. As part of a subsequent exchange, Bastian Oechsle recently presented the research results in printed form to the Bezirksjugendring Oberbayern on behalf of the department of Social Work in order to make the scientific findings accessible for practical use and to promote the transfer of knowledge between the university and youth association work.

The results show that multipliers and young people perceive the diversity department as a key resource and important source of advice. They particularly appreciate the low-threshold support and the role of the specialists as key figures for coordination and organization. At the same time, the results clearly show that safer spaces are particularly important, but also present challenges. Striking the right balance between protection, openness, and inclusion remains a key task and challenge.

Bastian Oechsle: "The evaluation of the diversity department has clearly shown that there is a significant need for services and support for young people in the LBGTQIA+ community in Bavaria. As this is a particularly vulnerable group, great care and sensitivity must be exercised to ensure that safe spaces for young people remain in place. At the same time, it is important to stand up for equal opportunities and visibility. We were delighted to develop appropriate recommendations for action as part of the research project."

Laura Feith González: "The evaluation of the diversity department, in particular the Ju&mi center for youth work in the migration society, has clearly shown how crucial empowerment and participation opportunities are for BIPoC youth in Upper Bavaria. The center makes a significant contribution to creating spaces for self-efficacy, visibility, and belonging. At the same time, it became clear that continuous funding and transparent communication structures are crucial to securing and further developing this important work in the long term – aspects that became particularly apparent in the evaluation and the recommendations for action that were developed."
