Research Stay in South Korea

Date 2025-06-16

Matthias Panny from the MCI Department of Mechatronics spent two months researching at Chung-Ang University in Seoul

The aim of the research stay was to gain experience for his own research work and to promote international scientific networking. At Chang-Ang University, Matthias Panny worked in the “System Design with Advanced Composites Lab” on pioneering technologies in the field of intelligent materials.

The research focus was on advanced composites with integrated piezoelectric strain sensors, which are used for structural health monitoring. These sensors made of flexible piezoelectric plastics make it possible to detect potential damage, such as cracks or delamination due to impact loads, within fiber composites such as carbon at an early stage.

Particular attention was paid to integrating the sensors into composite structures that were produced using continuous fiber 3D printing. The aim was to use machine learning to draw precise conclusions about the location and extent of damage. To this end, Matthias Panny not only developed specific data acquisition software, but also implemented deep learning models for the automated analysis of the acquired measurement data.

The stay provided valuable impetus for the further development of research work at the MCI and represents an important building block for global scientific cooperation.
