mechXchange with Albrecht Gensior during MCI Sustainability Week

Date 2026-05-26

Guest lecture on the control of power electronics in renewable energy generation plants

Prof. Albrecht Gensior has been a tenured professor at Ilmenau University of Technology since 2021, where he heads the Department of Power Electronics and Control Systems in Electrical Power Engineering. Through his research, he is helping to drive forward the efficient integration of renewable energies into our electricity grid and is working on improving grid quality through intelligent control and power electronics.

In his lecture, he explained the key aspects of his research: the parallel cascading of power converters offers a simple way to scale up power whilst maintaining the system voltage. At the same time, this creates flexibility in the control of the power converters, which can be used to advantage to reduce switching harmonics. These methods are applied, amongst other things, in the field of wind energy and were developed in cooperation with the wind turbine manufacturer ENERCON.

Following an engaging presentation, held for the first time in collaboration with the Mechatronics Colloquium at UMIT TIROL, there was a lively exchange during the get-together: lecturers, students, and alumni from our Department of Mechatronics and from UMIT TIROL took the opportunity to network. The mechXchange event series thus once again provided a valuable platform for knowledge transfer and exchange.
