MCI sets sustainable standards: Blended Intensive Program honored as Green Event

Recently, exemplary events were honored for their sustainable implementation at the Green Events Tirol awards ceremony. The MCI Department of Social Work received Green Event certification for the one-week international Blended Intensive Program (BIP) “Learning from the Future: Social Work Perspectives on a Digital Society.”

As part of the BIP, the department invited international partner universities to Innsbruck to jointly explore the digital future of Social Work. The team placed particular emphasis on sustainable organization: from waste management to consistently vegan catering throughout the week, the standards of Green Event certification were implemented.

Green Events Tirol stands for events that holistically consider mobility, catering, energy, waste, and social aspects. Event organizers receive free, comprehensive advice from Klimabündnis Tirol. If sufficient criteria are met, the State of Tyrol grants the award.

Klimabündnis Tirol has been supporting events since 2014. The figures show that sustainable events are booming in Tyrol: last year, 278 events comprising around 900 event days were held as Green Event Tirol. Green Events thus send a strong signal: sustainable, inclusive, and resource-efficient.

Why this commitment matters especially for higher education and Social Work: Educational institutions shape societal debates and have a clear role-model function. By consistently anchoring sustainability in planning and implementation, the MCI Department of Social Work contributes to eco-social transformation – practice-oriented, visible, and with direct impact on teaching and networks. The BIP demonstrates how academic exchange and responsible implementation can go hand in hand, setting standards the field can use as benchmarks.
