Since January 2024, SPIEGLTEC, in collaboration with the Food Science & Biotechnology research cluster, has been operating a state-of-the-art cell culture laboratory at the MCI Campus Technology & Life Sciences in Innsbruck.
This facility develops innovative solutions for the pharmaceutical industry. Equipped with cutting-edge technology, the lab offers ideal conditions for scientific and technical research in the fields of biotechnology and pharmacy. It supports companies in efficiently achieving their Research & Development goals and helps set new standards in cell culture technology.
Two Specialized Sections for Optimal Research
The cell culture laboratory is divided into two dedicated areas, each designed to meet specific research objectives:
Cell Culture Lab: Equipped with advanced instruments such as CO₂ incubators, a laminar flow workbench, a flow cytometer, and a highly specialized lab bioreactor with perfusion capabilities, this space provides the optimal environment for demanding cell culture projects.
Skid-Lab: Designed for testing standalone skids, this lab features comprehensive media supply systems including compressed air, nitrogen, CO₂, as well as hot and cold water. It supports the ongoing development of process units that continue to expand SPIEGLTEC’s service portfolio.
Research Focus and Collaboration
The lab conducts projects in the areas of process modularization and process intensification—both key topics in the biopharmaceutical production of antibodies, for example. A central component of the lab’s operations is close collaboration with additional partners to foster scientific exchange and generate practical, applicable insights.
CellStream Project: Innovation in Perfusion Technology
A particular highlight is the CellStream project, funded by the Tyrolean government. Together with SPIEGLTEC and glassblower Ruprechter, MCI is exploring novel perfusion solutions. The project aims to enhance efficiency and performance in biopharmaceutical manufacturing processes.
MumEco Project: New Membranes for Innovative Processes
As an extension of CellStream, the MumEco project focuses on optimizing perfusion processes through improved membrane technology. The consortium includes MCI and SPIEGLTEC, supported by membrane filtration expert MEMZEP.
MCI’s research cluster in Food Science & Biotechnology and Energy & Process Technologies contribute their expertise in molecular biology and novel process technologies. These projects combine scientific knowledge with industrial application to better understand and optimize bio-technical processes. CellStream and MumEco represent key initiatives that integrate core competencies and promote technology transfer into industrial practice.
