Recent developments in technology, business, and society have been enormous. Industrial companies are undergoing a period of sweeping transformation, driven in part by increasing digitalization, global integration, and international competition. This has prompted us to adapt and modernize the existing master’s curriculum.
The focus areas of “Technology Entrepreneurship” – that is, industry-related entrepreneurship – and digitalization have been newly introduced into the curriculum and are incorporated into the existing core modules of the industrial engineering program. This aims to foster greater interconnection between the modules and promote the integration of cross-semester, problem-based learning.
Entrepreneurial thinking and the acquisition of key competencies are intended to be fostered through AI-supported problem-solving, the identification of opportunities, and rapid experimentation, with the goal of bringing new or adapted technologies to market. The acquisition of digital systems thinking for the introduction of responsible innovations is intended to be a skill that students have mastered by the time they graduate.
Innovative teaching approaches such as the “flipped classroom concept” and, increasingly, asynchronous components are designed to encourage independent work on assignments and provide greater flexibility.
The new curriculum is also characterized by a strong international focus. Exchange programs with numerous partner universities, as well as the opportunity to participate in an Africa Study Tour focused on entrepreneurship, link the newly introduced specializations with international experience. A double-degree program with an Italian university offers the unique opportunity to earn two master degrees in industrial engineering.
The part-time degree programs offer the greatest possible flexibility for balancing continuing education, work, and family life. The traditional part-time schedule model features classes on Friday afternoons and all day on Saturdays. In contrast, the work-friendly schedule model is structured as full-day sessions from Monday through Wednesday. As a result, the degree programs offer students a high degree of predictability. In both schedules, Thursday evenings feature online classes, which complement the schedule and provide additional flexibility.
