International Relations Recruiting Team explores mobility shifts, emerging regions, and Europe’s growing appeal

In early November, the IRO Recruiting Team attended ICEF Berlin 2025 — the 30th anniversary edition of one of the most influential international networking platforms for educational collaboration. The event once again brought together hundreds of institutions, agencies and sector experts from over 100 countries, offering valuable insights into current developments in global education and student mobility.

Global Mobility Shift: Europe and Austria on the Rise

Across meetings, panel discussions and expert sessions, one trend stood out clearly: international student mobility is gradually shifting away from the traditional “Big Four” destinations — the United States, the United Kingdom, Australia and Canada. Among the most frequently cited reasons were stricter visa and immigration regulations, rising living costs and increasing geopolitical uncertainty.

At the same time, Europe, particularly the German-speaking region, is gaining visibility and relevance as a study destination. Austria, in this context, was repeatedly highlighted by international partners and families as a reliable, safe and academically strong and affordable alternative.

Key factors frequently mentioned included:

  • High academic reputation, backed by international accreditations and quality standards
  • Applied and practice-oriented learning with strong industry links (employability)
  • A safe and stable environment, often a top priority for families
  • Excellent quality of life and student well-being

Several agents also emphasized that Austria appeals especially to students seeking clear academic structure, personal guidance, and a supportive environment.

MCI Focus Regions 2025: Eastern Europe, Central Asia & Turkey

The IRO Recruiting Team engaged in productive discussions with partners from emerging and fast-growing markets, including Eastern Europe, Central Asia (Kazakhstan, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan) and Turkey. These regions represent young, ambitious and education-driven demographics with strong interest in internationally recognized and stable academic pathways. Many prospective students also demonstrate solid language skills and relevant prior experience, making them a promising match for MCI’s applied-learning model.

Third Participation: Continuity Builds Trust

This was MCI’s third participation at the ICEF Berlin, significating an important sign of continuity that strengthens long-term cooperation and reinforces trust among partners who value responsible and sustainable collaboration.

ICEF Berlin 2025 once again highlighted how rapidly the global education landscape is evolving — and how well Austria is positioned to respond to changing expectations and priorities. The IRO Recruiting Team returned with valuable insights, strengthened relationships and new perspectives, confirming that international diversity and strong regional roots can complement each other and create sustainable benefits for the Tirol and beyond.
