MCI buddies contact exchange students before they arrive in Innsbruck and then support them – for example by giving them an understanding of everyday life in Austria and helping them with administrative procedures; as buddies, they enjoy an international atmosphere, make friends worldwide and improve their foreign language skills.
Adriana Friedow, a student of the Bachelor's degree program in Social, Health & Public Management, gives us insights into her work:
What motivated you to become a buddy and accompany international students?
I am particularly motivated by supporting international students in arriving in a new environment, as I have experienced myself how challenging it can be to move away from home for your studies. I would like to use my experience, helpfulness and joy of exchange to give others orientation, support and a feeling of warmth.
What places or activities in Innsbruck do you usually show new buddies first?
I like to show the mixture of city and nature that Innsbruck offers. This usually means the old town, along the Inn and perhaps also nearby into the forest. Afterwards, we explore the city together, depending on the students' interests.
What do you personally like most about being a buddy?
I have a great interest in languages and cultures. That's why I am also intrigued by the personal exchange with international students, because there is always something new. I also find the mix of individual needs exciting. So it is always varied and never the same.
