IAITQM Recognizes Contributions to Data Science and Their Application in Planning and Resource-Allocation Decisions

Johannes Siebert, Professor of Decision Sciences, Behavioral Economics, and Supply Chain Management at MCI | The Entrepreneurial School®, has received the Richard Price Award from the International Academy of Information Technology and Quantitative Management (IAITQM) and has also been elected a Fellow of the Academy. The award was presented at the 13th International Conference on Information Technology and Quantitative Management (ITQM 2026) in Rouen.

The Richard Price Award honors individuals who have made outstanding contributions to the theory, methodology, and application of data science. It is named after Richard Price, who published Thomas Bayes’ foundational work after Bayes’ death and thereby contributed to the dissemination of one of the foundations of modern data-driven reasoning.Through the award, IAITQM recognizes Siebert’s work at the intersection of data science, quantitative management methods, and decision support. His research program combines data-driven and AI-supported approaches with multi-criteria decision methods. It focuses on structuring organizational objective systems and on decisions under uncertainty involving partially conflicting objectives.

The approaches developed support sound operational and strategic decisions on the allocation of resources and capital and the management of portfolios. Their practical relevance is demonstrated in applications in which quantitative models are linked to concrete planning, prioritization, and management decisions.

"Data science is fundamentally transforming how decisions are made – and at the same time, the importance of structured, value-oriented decision processes has never been greater. This award strongly motivates me to further advance this field across research, practice, and teaching," says Johannes Siebert.

At MCI, Siebert conducts research and teaches in the fields of data-driven decision-making, business analytics, behavioral economics, and multi-criteria methods. His work focuses on corporate planning, prioritization, and decision-making, as well as the role of artificial intelligence in decision support. One area of application is the management of complex project and innovation portfolios: Siebert contributed to a model for prioritizing early-stage research and development projects at Bayer AG; the work was published in the journal Decision Analysis. For the California Department of Transportation (Caltrans), he also contributed to an objective system for prioritizing a maintenance budget in the double-digit billions of US dollars. Further research examines decision quality, human–AI decision support, and decision-making behavior in supplier evaluation and selection.

In his course “Strategic and Operational Decision-Making,” students apply the methods to their own real-world decision cases and analyze their strategic and operational consequences. Beyond research and teaching, Siebert transfers his findings into programs designed to strengthen decision-making competence, extending their impact beyond the university.

„This award underscores the international significance of MCI’s research in the fields of entrepreneurship and decision making. It demonstrates that innovative research on entrepreneurial behavior and intelligent decision-making is recognized worldwide and that it strengthens MCI’s international reputation in the long term“, adds MCI Head of Research & Development Martin Pillei.

Siebert’s academic references include a paper co-authored with Ralph L. Keeney of Duke University and published in Operations Research, one of the world’s leading journals in the field. His work has also received broad international recognition, including the 2026 CEEMAN Champion Award in the Teacher of the Year category, the Inspirational Achievement Award of the Society for Decision Professionals, and the Best Research Paper Award of the Decision Sciences Journal of Innovative Education in 2023.
