Greetings from Rebecca in Hong Kong! It’s hard to believe that l've already been here for almost three months and that the end of my study-abroad experience is getting closer every day. I arrived in late August together with many other students from different countries, and from the very beginning I was completely amazed by the beauty of this city. Despite my initial fear of moving to the opposite side of the world, Hong Kong immediately felt vibrant, stimulating, and surprisingly welcoming.
Organizing my arrival was easier than I expected. Students are assigned rooms on campus, which is located just a short walk from the university and comes with a gym, a swimming pool and several sports hubs included.
Another thing I appreciated is the flexibility in choosing courses: the subjects listed in the research proposal can be changed later on because, during the first two weeks of the semester, students are allowed to try out different classes before finalizing their schedule. It was a completely new system for me, but incredibly useful because it helped us shape a timetable that fit our preferences and ensured that we only kept courses we genuinely enjoyed.
Another big difference from the Austrian system is the midterm period in the middle of the semester, with graded tests on the first part of the material, followed by the finals in December covering the remaining content. All of this might sound like a lot, but don't worry! It's actually very manageable to balance university life with time outside of class.
Hong Kong's location makes it incredibly easy to travel, and I personally had the opportunity to visit several cities in China, South Korea, Taiwan, and Malaysia. The university also offers various day trips (most for free) and certain courses include field trips, for example, our class went to Seoul for five days, which was an unforgettable experience.
In conclusion, this city is full of energy and inspiration. You meet people from all over the world, discover customs and traditions you never imagined, and truly grow as a person. Studying here is a great learning experience that really opens your mind and gives you something unique that you won't find anywhere else.
