Why Hawaii?

The choice for my semester abroad was influenced by many factors. Academically, the prospect of improving my English skills drew me to Hawaii. Making significant progress in my English level at the end of my studies seems very sensible to me.

Personally, surfing was a major draw for me to Hawaii. Surfing in a tropical sea before or after university or on weekends is a luxury comparable to skiing in Innsbruck.

Culturally, my father especially recommended this place to me. Here, Hawaiian culture still plays a significant role. I find the identification of the locals with nature and the sea fascinating and wanted to learn more about it.

My Favorite Course: Biomedical Instrument & Device Fabrication

My favorite course was "Biomedical Instrument & Device Fabrication." This course covered various biomedical devices, each accompanied by a lab and a lab report. The professor was very friendly and open to interaction and content determination from our side. The course had only six participants, making the atmosphere very private and adaptable. Although it was time-intensive, it was manageable. We had a well-equipped lab and an interesting visit to an innovative hospital.

A Typical Day in Student Life

University life differs significantly from that in Innsbruck at MCI. Course selection is very flexible, so you sit with different people in most courses. Most courses start at 10:30 a.m. and last about 1.5 hours. How many courses you take afterward depends on your individually chosen schedule. Some students have classes until the evening, while others – like me – have university four days a week and Fridays off.

In the mornings, I was usually active – surfing, jogging, swimming, or playing beach volleyball. The island and the people here are very sporty, and you always find someone who wants to join. On Fridays, I completed assignments and online tests, so the weekend was mostly free, except during exam periods.

The exam structure also differs. There are midterm exams (about 20% of the grade) and finals (another 20%). Attendance can account for up to 20% of the grade. The rest consists of assignments, reports, and participation. In some courses, there are no exams, only lab reports and presentations.

Travel and Cultural Experiences

Surfing is a must! Especially in Waikiki (longboard) and the North Shore (shortboard). Hiking is also very popular, even though it's not my biggest passion. If you have time, you should definitely visit the neighboring islands like Maui or Kauai – although they are only accessible by plane.

Other highlights include Hula shows, surf contests, or adventurous activities like shark diving and skydiving to experience the island from a new perspective.

Tips for Future Exchange Students

  • Social Contacts: Many Germans study here, which makes it easier at the beginning. However, you should actively try to get to know the locals.
  • Road Trips: A long weekend is perfect for exploring the island.
  • Surf Contests: Especially in winter, the huge waves at the North Shore are spectacular – as a spectator or participant.
  • Respect for Locals: Hawaiians love the sea and surfing – respect the local rules and traditions.
  • Living Situation: It's best to live in Waikiki or Ala Moana. Other areas can be either too far away or unsafe.
  • Costs: Hawaii is expensive. Expect at least €1,000 rent per month.

Conclusion

Hawaii is a paradise and an unforgettable experience for a semester abroad. The combination of nature, sports, and education makes this stay unique!
