The decision to choose Istanbul was based on personal reasons for both of them. Rania had long been fascinated by Turkish culture, influenced by her Turkish friends and her love of Turkish TV series. She did not just want to learn about the culture but to experience it firsthand. Through her family, Edanur also has a strong connection to Turkey. Although she already knew the country from many summer visits, she wanted to experience Istanbul from the perspective of a student.
From the very beginning, both were fascinated by the energy of this vibrant metropolis. Istanbul is known as a city that never sleeps, and it was precisely this liveliness that shaped their stay. The way animals are treated was also particularly memorable: cats and dogs are naturally part of the cityscape. One dog even regularly accompanied the two students from their dormitory to the shuttle bus.
Turkish cuisine also played an important role. Food is much more than an everyday necessity there – it is a central part of the culture and social life.
One of their favorite courses was Systems Biology. At first, they had great respect for the Master's-level course, but they were ultimately able to complete it successfully. The course focused on biological systems, the interaction of cells and networks, as well as mathematical and computational methods. They particularly enjoyed the opportunity to use their Python skills for simulations and data analysis.
The course included both group and individual assignments, allowing them to deepen their understanding of the topics. They could also rely on the support of the professor and three teaching assistants whenever they needed help.
Daily life at Koç University was varied and well structured. Classes took place from Monday to Thursday, which meant that the extended weekends could often be used for traveling or exploring the city. Many Erasmus and Turkish students lived in the dormitory, making it easy to meet new people and make connections.
A particular highlight was the large library, which is open 24 hours a day. Before exams, Rania and Edanur often studied there late into the night. Campus life also offered plenty of variety: in addition to the cafeteria and food courts, there were cafés, a fitness center, a swimming pool, and an impressive view of the Bosphorus Bridge.
At weekends, the two explored different neighborhoods and landmarks such as Hagia Sophia and the Galata Tower. Walks by the sea and even horseback riding on the beach made their stay particularly varied.
They also highly recommend the activities organized by the Erasmus Incoming Organization. Group trips took them, for example, to Cappadocia, Antalya, and Kaş. Karaoke and game nights, parties, and other events also provided plenty of opportunities to meet other international students.
There is always something new to discover in Istanbul, even in everyday life: street musicians, mosques, culinary specialities, and the vibrant atmosphere of the city. Some of the most beautiful moments were the simple ones, such as sitting by the sea and drinking Turkish black tea, known as Çay.
For a successful Erasmus semester, Rania and Edanur especially recommend being open-minded. Those who embrace new people and a new culture can gain a great deal from their experience abroad.
Turkish cuisine is also something that should definitely be enjoyed to the fullest – from İskender and Baklava to a traditional Turkish breakfast. It is also worth exploring as much of the country as possible. One particularly special experience is taking a ferry across the Bosphorus and traveling between two continents.
Good organization is also important. Documents such as visas should be arranged well in advance. At the same time, students should consciously make time alongside their studies for traveling, cultural activities, and new experiences.
For Rania and Edanur, their Erasmus semester in Istanbul was an unforgettable experience. Istanbul impressed them with its diversity, energy, and unique way of life. Between lecture halls and the Bosphorus, long nights in the library, Turkish Çay by the sea, and new friendships, they created memories that will stay with them for a long time.
