EURAM Best Paper Award goes to MCI

Research team headed by MCI Professor Florian Bauer awarded one of Europe’s major strategic management prizes

MCI is delighted about its most recent achievement: within the framework of this year’s EURAM conference in Paris, the research team of Professor Florian Bauer won the 2016 Best Paper Award. The MCI professor and his co-authors David R. King (Iowa State University), Svante Schriber (Stockholm Business School), and Kurt Matzler (Universities of Bolzano and Innsbruck) were honored for their excellent paper, titled “Acquisition Characteristics, Integration Choices, and Performance: A Process Perspective”.

The outstanding publication offers highly relevant insights into practical and theoretical issues of mergers and acquisitions. The economic significance of such transactions is remarkable: in 2015, the global volume of M&A transactions surpassed even the gross domestic product of Germany. Despite this fact, the success rate has as yet been moderate, with only about 40 percent of all transactions leading to a measurable increase in the value of the companies involved.

The authors have now developed an innovative typology based on the strategic orientation of companies involved in M&A transactions. The typology demonstrates potential sources of value as well as their implications for mechanisms for increasing value. This will facilitate considerable rise in the efficiency of future mergers and acquisitions. The developed rationale was empirically proven in the paper and furthermore emphasizes the necessity of an integrative approach and provides clear implications for managers.

The idea for the award-winning paper emerged from the SMA Research Lab, which was initiated by the University of Innsbruck and MCI in 2012. Research carried out by the lab thus makes valuable contributions to the scientific discourse and actively aids companies in meeting strategic challenges.

Founded in 2001, EURAM today includes members from almost 50 European countries. The society aims to advance scientific exchange in strategic management and to create a platform for international dialogue. The Best Paper Award has been awarded within the framework of the annual EURAM conference since 2010.
