BWLO Insights: New lecturers at our department (1/2)

Part 1: Interview with Wendy Farrell

This autumn we have not only welcomed many new students to our team but also two new lecturers. This week, Wendy Farrell and Moritz Mosenhauer start teaching their first courses in our Bachelor and Master programs. We asked both of them for an interview.

In this article, you get to know Wendy Farrell, Senior Lecturer in the field of (international) business & management.

What did you do before you started to work at MCI?

Before joining MCI, I taught international business in the Netherlands and Thailand.

What are your research interests?

My research interest focuses on the intersection of technology, business and culture. Some examples of recent and current projects include:

  • How different cultures utilize communication technology for business communications.
  • How culture influences knowledge sharing and the corresponding utilization of technology to manage and share knowledge.
  • How culture influences the behavioral intention to use e-learning technology

Who is your role model in your field of research?

Dr. Fons Trompenaars (Cross-Cultural Management) and Dr. Viswanath Venkatesh (IT). Both of these highly distinguished and successful scholars are still approachable and take the time to help aspiring scholars.

What is particularly important to you when working with students?

When I work with students, I try to inspire them to want to do more and be better. Not only do I try to bring in real world examples and interactions, but I also try to bring an understanding for the reality of our students. Studying while working full time and balancing a family leaves little room to pursue personal development. When we do take that step to better ourselves, often competing obligations consume our time and even the most ambitious of us can find ourselves prioritizing simply according to deadline.  While remaining respectful of these competing obligations, I try to use deadlines to help students prioritize their learning so they can get the most out of their time with us.

You just moved to Innsbruck a few weeks ago - would you like to share your highlight with us?

I moved here this summer with my son and our dog. Perhaps I am still in the honeymoon phase of my relocation, but Innsbruck is still my perfect town. It has the international flair of a big city but is small enough so that most places are reachable by foot or by bike. There are many opportunities to engage in life, ranging from open lectures to cafes and pubs to hiking and (now as the weather gets colder) skiing. Since I no longer have a long commute, I can now take the time to enjoy the many things Innsbruck has to offer.

How would you describe the Business Administration Online department in 5 words?

AWESOME, Professional, Thoughtful, Caring, Family.

Thank you for the interview and have a good start at MCI!
