So-called "Chemical Vapor Deposition (CVD)" processes are complex coating processes that have not yet been fully understood. For this reason, the gas dynamics of the complex diamond coating process developed by CarbonCompetence was simulated for the first time as part of this R&D project in order to understand and control the influencing parameters for homogeneous, large-scale thin film growth on 3D components and tools.
Using Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD), it was possible to develop a simulation model to predict the gas distribution under complex boundary conditions (above 2,200 ° C, vacuum, laminar / turbulent flows, etc.) and the process parameters. This enabled the scaling-up for use in industry. The project was successfully completed after 18 months. Based on the results a follow-up project is planned.
