ATP plans sustainable own power generation

MCI partner builds the largest subsidized photovoltaic system at Handl Gastro Service in the Landeck/Tyrol district

The planning office ATP architects engineers, headquartered in Innsbruck, is a partner of the new study program "Smart Building Technologies" at the MCI Entrepreneurial School®. As a leading office for integral planning, ATP focuses on the highest standards for sustainable, resource- and energy-saving buildings – as in the current project for Handl Gastro Service.

With around 1,000 panels, the largest subsidized photovoltaic system in the district of Landeck (Tyrol) will go into operation on the roofs of Handl Gastro Service's new operations building in May 2021. With peak outputs of around 380 kWp, the new building planned by ATP Innsbruck will then produce around 420,000 kWH of electricity per year. This corresponds to the electricity demand of more than 100 households.

In order to achieve the optimal "yield" of sunlight in the narrow valley basin of Pians, ATP conducted a comprehensive study in the course of the design planning. Due to uncertainties regarding subsidies, three different variants and expansion stages were examined. Together with the client, the decision was made to maximize the roof area coverage by PV modules with an east-west orientation and to reduce the maintenance paths on the roof to a minimum.

With a self-consumption rate of almost 100%, the system offers the best conditions for sustainable energy production. This means that the electricity generated by the PV system is not supplied to the grid, but is consumed by Handl Gastro Service itself. Not only peaks can be covered by the generated electricity, but about 25 % of the total electricity demand will be covered by the PV system alone in the future. "This is where useability meets sustainability – the close collaboration with the industry in the 'Smart Building Technologies' study program will enable our students to get up close and personal with such developments," says program director Werner Stadlmayr enthusiastically.

A special feature worldwide is the roof construction planned by ATP in the sales and catering area, part of which is designed as a point-supported flat ceiling with cross-laminated timber elements. This eliminates the need for the underlays and overlays customary in timber construction. With a total area of 650 m2, it represents the world’s largest cross laminated timber panel to date.

The system is also visually impressive: as a uniform and level ceiling soffit, the timber ceiling spans the room effectively and dramatically - without any disturbing beams.
