The Self-Support Grant at MCI

The desire for professional advancement and academic specialization often marks a turning point in the lives of experienced professionals. Those who are already established in their careers bring valuable practical expertise—but returning to university is always an economic consideration as well. The self-support grant provides an ideal foundation for choosing MCI | The Entrepreneurial School® as the place for the next career step.

Bridging Professional Experience and Academic Study

The self-support grant is one of the most effective instruments within Austria’s public student funding system. It is specifically designed for individuals who have been financially independent for an extended period. This makes it an excellent match for the philosophy of MCI | The Entrepreneurial School®, where the integration of theory and practice lies at the heart of its identity. Unlike other forms of financial aid, parental income is not considered—the decisive factor is the applicant’s own financial independence and professional achievement.

Current Figures and Key Facts

Through regular adjustments to student funding, the self-support grant has been updated to ensure financial security during academic training:

  • Monthly support: The maximum amount currently reaches up to €1,082 per month. For students aged 27 and older, this increases to up to €1,121 per month.
  • Attractive additional earnings limit: Flexibility remains a key advantage. Students receiving the grant and enrolled at MCI may earn up to €17,212 per calendar year, allowing them to combine their studies with part-time professional work.
  • Age limits and extensions: In general, studies must begin before the age of 33. However, depending on the duration of prior financial independence, this limit may be extended up to the age of 38.
Eligibility Requirements

To qualify for the self-support grant while studying at MCI | The Entrepreneurial School®, specific criteria must be met:

  1. Four years of financial independence: Applicants must demonstrate at least 48 months of self-support prior to receiving the grant.
  2. Minimum income requirement: During these four years, a minimum net income of €11,000 per year must have been earned.
  3. Recognized periods: Mandatory military or civilian service periods are recognized as qualifying periods of self-support.
