Family allowance in Austria is an important source of financial support for many students. For students at MCI | The Entrepreneurial School® in Innsbruck, family allowance also plays a central role during their studies. It helps cover living expenses and allows many students to focus more fully on their bachelor’s or master’s program at MCI.
In general, parents can receive family allowance for their children as long as they are in education – this also includes a bachelor’s or master’s program at MCI.
Eligibility for family allowance generally only exists for children who permanently reside in Austria. Parents are entitled to receive the allowance if
Family allowance is usually granted until the child’s 24th birthday. In certain cases, eligibility can be extended until the age of 25, for example in cases of military or civil service, pregnancy, or when caring for one’s own child.
To continue receiving family allowance during studies at MCI, students must pursue their studies seriously and with clear academic progress. After the first academic year, proof of academic achievement of at least 16 ECTS credits is required. If this proof is not provided in time, the payment of family allowance may be temporarily suspended.
The amount of family allowance in Austria depends on the age of the child. In the calendar year 2026, students aged 19 and older receive 200.40 euros per month per child. The amount may increase depending on the number of siblings. The current rates can be found here.
Adult children for whom family allowance is granted can apply at the Austrian tax office (Finanzamt Österreich) to have the payment transferred directly to their own bank account. However, this requires the consent of the parent who is entitled to receive the allowance. This consent must be confirmed in the corresponding application.
Students at MCI are allowed to work during their studies as long as they stay within the additional income limit for family allowance. In 2026, this limit is approximately 10,000 euros of taxable income per year. If this threshold is exceeded, family allowance payments may have to be repaid.
