The City

Mumbai, the most populous city in India, is the second most populous city in the world, with a population of approximately 14 million. Mumbai lies on the west coast of India and has a deep natural harbor. Mumbai is the richest city in India. Mumbai is the commercial and entertainment center of India, generating 5% of India's GDP,and accounting for 25% of industrial output, 40% of maritime trade, and 70% of capital transactions to India's economy.

The University

The Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS) was established in 1936, as the Sir Dorabji Tata Graduate School of Social Work. Since then, the TISS has been expanding continuously in terms of educational programs and infrastructure. While responding to the changing needs of the social and educational system in the country, the Institute has gone far beyond the initial concern of social work education. Thus, what started as a small institution offering a post-graduate diploma in Social Work, grew into a Deemed University and, as a result, diversified its activities.

As of 2006, the TISS has restructured its existing departments and units into schools and independent centers. Its six schools comprise: Health Systems Studies, Management and Labour Studies, Rural Development, Social Sciences and Social Work, Habitat studies. Its four independent centers focus on Disaster Management, Lifelong Learning, Media and Cultural Studies and Research Methodology.
