Born in Marseille on December 2, 1961, Gilles Pécout is a graduate of the École normale supérieure, historian, university professor at the École normale supérieure in Paris, where he headed its Department of History, and also holds the chair of "Political and Cultural History of the European Mediterranean" at the École pratique des hautes Études (EPHE - Sorbonne).

Rector of the Academy of Paris and the academic region of Ile de France, and also University Chancellor of Paris from 2016, he is one of the three drafters of the Treaty of Quirinal appointed by President Macron in January 2018.

From September 2020 he has become Ambassador of France in Austria.
